the fees of fencing

so i have been looking at fencing lessons and such. i was just wondering what a decent price is. also, should i take lessons from the start, or should i do drills at home and gain all the theory of fencing first. i am a highschool student without much money, so i just want to know what the best use of my money would be.

If you want to learn how to fence, it is best to learn with an instructor in a class. Contact your National Fencing Association (USFA -if you are American or CFF -if you are Canadian) to find fencing clubs in your area. Phone around to get prices and class times.

The books and at home drills will make more sense once you have some instruction.

Take lessons first. It's better to get a good foundation and then work out on your own than start off on your own, forming bad habits that need to be broken at great time and expense later.

There are also tons of misconceptions about the sport of fencing, some shouted loudly by those who claim to be practitioners or great fencing masters. It's far better to start learning correctly first.

It depends a lot on your club. If they offer group lessons, those will probably be much cheaper than individual lessons, and you'll get the basics from those. A beginner group lesson is really what I think you're looking for, and they're offered at most clubs.

Cost also depends a lot on your club. $20 seems to be about average for a 30 minute lesson, but it can be a lot more or a lot less. (There might have been a thread about this at some point.)

(Assuming you live in the US), to find a club, go to www.usfencing.org and click "Where can I fence?" in the second blue box on the right of your screen. Then click your state, and you'll be able to figure out where the closest clubs are.

The USFA (usfencing.org) has a club finder, to let you browse your options. Fencing.net has one too, but it's not as comprehensive as the USFA's.
Keep in mind that you may pay a bit more for some clubs, but they provide equipment and/or better facilities. And wow, the clubs in that thread posted earlier are so much more than mine. 40$ a month for twice a week in a nice (but not dedicated) facility, with private lessons included, equipment provided.
