    Ignore thread option

    Hi!

it has been suggested in another thread that it would be nifty to have an option to mark an entire thread as "Ignore". Then one would have less clutter when one uses the New Posts or User Control Panel options. I like this idea. I do not see any drawbacks other than extra work for Craig, with is a valid drawback in itself. What are your opinions?

How about an "ignore forum" option. I have previously said I would like to not have to see the new posts from games and politics.

Don't know whether or not I'd use it, but I like reading through most of the meaningless garbage threads in the hopes that they'll drift into something either useful or amusing. In the WC I suspect I'd find a number of uses.

    Voting seems fairly definitive.

would make the database at least a little bit larger and would require some hands-on messing with the vB code, which i'm unsure as to how easy that would be (never used it, myself). would probably be a day's worth of work.

imho, a better option would be one to ignore entire forums (i.e. the results forum, or the games forum)

How many people read using the feature that lists all new threads rather than reading using the forum sections? In the latter case you can ignore the sections by just not entering them -- eg I don't need to explicitly ignore Fantasyland, I just don't pay any attention to it.

Being able to flag threads that one KNOWS are never going to be worth reading again in the future would have benefit even under the hierarchical structure, and that functionality cannot be replicated with an ignore-section addition.

I think this is an excellent idea as long as there was a listing of threads you've ignored in case you''d like to affect the change temporarily.

I don't use new posts, but would use it regularly if this feature were available.

I just use the forums normally, and honestly I don't understand all the complaining about forums bothering people. I mean, it was one thing when 75% of the water cooler threads were neverending games, but I don't think it's hard to ignore the forum. You just don't click on it.

Some people are just never satisfied.

This strikes me as a nonessential frippery. If it were costless, great, but...

How about this as a suggestion that would satisfy me.

Search would only start from where you are in the Forum hierarchy.

From General Fencing, it searches all the ones within it. From Armory, it only searches in Armory.

Use Advanced Search and you can designate this.

Or I believe when you are in a Forum you can pick the "Search This Forum" right next to "Forum Tools" right above the "replies/views" columns.

I have not been able to find an easy way to implement this feature request. Shelving it until available code catches up with requests.
