| A compliment to Graham Wicas from Maestro Chiado` A nice compliment to our fencer Graham Wicas from Maestro Dario Chiado` of the Club Accademia Scherma Marchesa in Torino, Italy, in an interview on Schermaonline http://www.schermaonline.com/scherma...rticle&sid=696
......... SCHERMAONLINE
Who are in your opinion the best epee fencers, men and women, in the international field? CHIADO` I'd say that the best are those who win the most, so all you need to do is to check the rankings and that's it! Actually this is a kind of a controversial reply because I think often you have excellent epeists who may not be so effective in terms of producing results, but who master an incredible technique. Often external components in a competition prevent them to reach the top results but this does not mean that they are not capable of excellent fencing performance.
For sure the really great ones succeed in combining style/technique with results in their performance on the strip. Pavel Kolobkov is without a doubt an example of this marvelous synthesis. In general I like the Russian school which has even in the under 20 category athletes which I think we will see very competitive at the senior level also. The aptitude and inspiration of Paolo Milanoli cannot be ignored either. I think that he really succeeded in creating his "own style of fencing."
Among the women it's easy to single out great athletes like Laura Flessel or Nagy. Actually I am very impressed by a young, still under 20, Ukrainian girl, Shemiakina who even though she uses a very simple technique she has an explosive strength and an impressive choice in tempo which make her very effective regardless of her (short) height. The young American fencer who won the Cadets World Championship in Taebaek City over Garozzo deserves a special mention. His name is Wicas and I'm afraid that in time he'll prove that US fencing has reached the top level in international competition also in epee. A really good and capable fencer!
............
Congratulations! |

The real reason that Mr. Wiccas won in Taebeak was not because of his exceptional skill, but actually because the Cadet field has become so incredibly weak.
RIGHT?????? |

| I thought he won because of Jeff Bukantz's leadership.

RIGHT?????? | Shame on you for minimizing Wicas' achievement. It's wonderful to hear an American is leading the pack in potential. Congrats Graham! |

Craig | *grin*
I was wondering why she wasn't mentioned.

| Mr Wiccas Graham's bout in Korea was FANTASTIC!!! Oh my gawd. It was amazing, he did so well.
Not being a really big fan of epee, (I am sorry but I was inculcated into saber) I thought ho hum, here is an epee bout. I was sooo wrong.
It was exciting, very well fenced and the entire crowd watched with rapt attention. Graham is such a nice and non assuming kid too. It is refreshing.
Graham put some incredible "WOW" in epee.
The Momster
PS Jim Carpenter was the team captain in Korea.

| Jim Carpenter... Jeff Bukantz... whats the difference?
They both wear glasses.
And their names both start with the letter J.
THEY ARE PRACTICALLY BROTHERS.

Actually I find it especially rich that an Italian coach is complimenting Wiccas when it was one of their fencers that was dissing him on here a few months ago.
Of course, we can all look forward to the inevitable Escrime magazine that "gently reminds" readers that US Fencers have been unable to transfer Cadet/Junior results to the seniors. |

I mean, you and I know that all italians think alike. Clearly this maestro and the fellow who posts here weren't at the weekly homogenized thinking meeting.

If you want to put him and his idiotic comment about Wicas in the same place with Maestro Chiado` and his sincere compliment for our fencer and for the accomplishments of American fencing then you are like the Italian teenager, i.e., totally off the mark. |

Anyway, be looking for that article in Escrime magazine, like I said.

"Noaz" [sic] | You pick up on the missing 'h', yet still somehow manage to remove the 'k' from the word "mark" at the end of your quote of his post?

Seriously, lay it off. It is not becoming. Focus on winning as many finals as Wicas, and you will feel better.
Anyway, Congratulations to Graham!
Have a nice time!
