Array World Trade Center This is truly a sad day for those in NY and the US.
Our prayers go out to the families and friends of those lost or injured in today's events.

Array I just heard about this when I got online. We won't get cable tv until the 25th of this month, and we can occassionaly get 2 channels on one tv, so I can't watch news or anything in the mornings. I wanted to cry when I saw this. An update says it looks like the work of terrorists. <sigh> What a scary world we live in. Willow, Princess of Marsteria, wife of Nicholas, mother of Daphne, sorceress to Arconia. -

Array My mom called us to see if we were watching general tv. JT was watching cartoons, so hubby came upstairs to turn on the tv. I was just waking up. I'm shocked...& angry. Talk about cowards. The plane that hit the World Trade Center was a hijacked jumbo jet from Boston. Those poor people.
As hubby said, whoever claims responsibility for this, they will be destroyed. It is so sad that innocent lives will be lost in the process. "Words are, of course, the most powerful drug used by mankind."

The Pentagon was also hit by a commercial flight....
One of the Towers collapsed about a half hour ago or so...I saw it live on TV.
They've evacuated the Sears Tower here in Chicago and the White House as well...ALL flights across the US are stopped. -
There might also be an additional hijacked plane that is still in the air...it is an unconfirmed report, however. -

Array I have been following the events of today, ans I must say from a professional standpoint, it was very well thought out and executed, as far as these types of events go. Don't get me wrong, on a personal level I'm mad as hell, but as was quoted on the other forum, "It's not personnal,it's just business". I have been wondering just how long it would be before something like this would happen. My heart does go out to the people personnally affected by this attack, but as far as the people responsible for it being destroyed, I'm sorry Moon, but the American people don't have the stomach anymore to do what it takes in order to do that. Expect more of this type of thing in the future.
P.S. Craig, the sad day for NY was when they elected their junior senator. Now THAT's sad.

Array Mergs, whether you believe in Him or not, is not the issue, but I'll say it anyway:

Array There are apparently four more hijacked planes in the air. Reports say eight total: four have been accounted for: two in NYC one at the Pentagon and one down in Western PA.
There is no humor in this as I and many of my co-workers are trying to locate loved ones now and praying that they are safe.

Array I posted this on several spots on FencingSucks.
"Perhaps it might be appropriate to go one day without all Metro/FC bashing, in light of what happened this morning. Somehow, slagging other fencing clubs seems woefully trivial at the moment.
As one radio commentator out here in L.A. said, pray to whatever god you worship for the victims."
Mergs, I have to agree on the professional angle. From a tactical standpoint, it was well carried out. I hope, however, that the terrorists are burning in Hell.
I'd really hate to be in the shoes of whoever planned then WHEN we find out...it's going to get really ugly.
We'll get a real chance here to see what Pres. Bush is capable of. Desert Storm was a defining moment for his father. We'll have to see how he handles something truly important here. -

Tojo and co. believed the exact same thing as you in 1941. 'Nuff said.

Array Purple, you are so right. Here's hoping that the FS people have enough sense to come in out of the storm...at least for today.
In the meantime, hug your families a little closer today, everyone. And, since you're a part of my family (the fencing family), here's one for you:

Only a fool would try to politicize this tragedy or compare it to the result of an election. Elections are about choice. The victims here had no choice.
That's what's really sad.

Array Let's not trivialize or politicize what's going on here today. This is worse than any scenario I've seen imagined in all the Tom Clancy-esque fiction I've read and goes beyond what I thought these organizations were capable of.
If anyone wants to do something positive, go to the Red Cross and donate some blood or plasma. You may be able to help save a life.

Array A tragic event, I hope none of us in the fencing community were on any of the flights or in the areas attacked. Also, I had the misfortune of picking the United Arab Emerates for the country I'm dressing up my cubicle at work for theme day, I'm thinking that might not go over very well now.

Array Why? I don't want to sound cliche, but you can't condemn a whole country for the actions of a few individuals. Plus as far as I know we still don't know who did this, they might not even be from the UAE... - Epee is the Louis Vuitton bag of fencing: only the best can get it, and the rest of the masses must content themselves with cheap knockoffs (sabre, foil)
- To not recognize the power of the French grip is to be in denial

Array And, as I recall, the UAE are on the side of the GOOD guys, relatively speaking...at least, they were one of the countries we were allegedly "protecting" during Desert Storm. Nothing is more frightening than ignorance in action. -

Array With emails flying back & forth, a conclusion has come to myself, as well as others: Do NOT let what happened today stop you from enjoying the blessings of your life. Embrace them. If you have fencing practice, GO. If you want to do something, DO IT. Those who have died would have wanted us to LIVE. And don't let the terrorist attacks scare you. That means they've won. Show love & compassion, but also show strength today. We must go on. "Words are, of course, the most powerful drug used by mankind."

Array I grieve for your people. It truly brought my day to a stop. Weird. We all dropped tools and stood by radios and TV's - I appreciate how my parents felt during the Cuban Arms crisis.
However I need to point something out. No-one (at THIS point 11/9/1 20:52 GMT) know who did this for sure. It has been ASSUMED that it's an Islamic fundamentalist plot but this has not been confirmed. Do not forget the Olklahoma bomber was an american.
The reason this is assumed to be a fundamentalist action is the suicidal nature. This the signature of many of their attacks. However I have no problem with believing it could as easily be christian fundamentalist plot or, some conspiracy theory nutter. Let's not reach for the big red button unnecessarily.
I wept when I saw the WTC workers waving from their windows, I cried when I saw that building collapse live on TV. Similar Threads -
