need special instructions for fixing FIE jacket zipper?

Yup... titles sez it all. Zipper is broken and needs to be fixed. Do I need to give the tailor any special instructions for fixing it?

If you're worried that a change would invalidate the homolugation, don't worry. Onn clothing items like jackets, knickers, underarm protectors, and the BIB of a mask, it's the material itself that is homolugated...not the design.

Just advise the tailor that it's ballistic fabric similar to kevlar so he can select the correct needle....aside from that, you're fine.

Special needles are unnecessary, any needle will work.

If is an FIE jacket with a liner and a piece of twill tape beside the zipper, it is easier to do that side of the zipper in two steps. Sometimes the twill tape will have to be replaced also if it is torn. Sew the twill tape to the lining. Sew the zipper to the top layer. Sew the twill tape and lining to the zipper and top layer (actually three steps). This is much easier and quicker than trying to get all four layers to cooperate. The other side will be easier. Use an 80 or 90 needle for strength.

I just took my FIE jacket to a dry cleaners to get the zipper fixed. They did a good job and didn't encounter any problems. The metal part of the zipper was the only part that was damaged; the fabric was intact.

Kevlar and other ballistic materials are good at defecting direct hits from relatively blunt objects such as a broken blade or even a bullet. Getting a very sharp object such as a needle through this kind of fabric is not very hard to do, though.
