| Sabre fencer here.
I actually have two levels of yelling. The mild one is that I yell "ha!" This is generally after I get a particularly satisfying touch. I'll do this sometimes at practice, where otherwise I don't scream.
The other yell is when I'm fully wound up in competitive mode, and it's definitely very aptly described by the poll choice "inarticulate screamy sound." It's very much an adrenaline thing. |

| I'm a foilist, and I don't scream that often, but I sometimes do when I make a really nice touch and that comes out like "Whooaa!" because I'm surprised and excited by it. It's not a very loud yell.
I also occasionally yell at the end of a really close bout (15-14/15-13 because I don't usually sweat pool bouts too much) because I'm happy about winning, and that's usually an "OAAAAHH!" That's usually a loud one, because it's an announcement to everyone "Hey, I won a close one." |

| I don't scream that much except when I start coming back from behind a few points I will scream and get my adrenaline going...sort of like a shot of nitrous on a car...plus it is intimidating. |

| yeah i don't scream, and i fence épée. epeeist seem to be the most quiet out of the lot, seems to me any how.
If some1 makes a touch (i always say nice or good touch...maybe I'm just opposite?) and they scream while I'm saying nice i always give a good chuckle-~as it is very amusing to me. its like saying go me! the Asian martial arts scream in order to exert there Qi, which i suppose adds conviction or some such to your sword during the move- but sense this is illegal during a bout it wouldn't apply to fencers.

| 'opa!' sometimes, if I'm being silly. But in more important competitions its 'Whahoa!' , or 'errrrrahhhhh!', or 'YES!'. But if I lose then it's 'ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh..........' or 'WHAT?!' if it's a bad call. he he. I do foil. What about the top fencers though? Have you heard Sanzo-'AHHOOOOOH!' or Deev- 'HEEEEEEY!' (high pitched), or the french woman's epeeist who's name I can't spell (starts with Flessel-.....) 'AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH, AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH, etc' she gets very excited. I've heard a men's epeeist who screams so high that not even girls can imitate him.

| I find I yell quite a bit fencing team events and college events. I feel so much more energetic after yelling and it helps me keep my energy up. Which is really important when you fence 12 rounds over 6 or 7 hours. I've cut back on most yelling during local comp's because I won a particularly difficult bout against a very good fencer and started yelling and jumped and almost pulled a Gramatica with my left knee. Still some people yell and if it helps them win why stop?

| I said that I don't scream, but actually I should have chosen "other." While it is true that I do not scream when making a point, I actually go further and suck the volume away from my opponents, rendering them unable to scream themselves. |

| Usually I don't scream...
If I'm semi-happy or am trying to sway the director its usually "Aiiii" like the "ai" in "aight, gangsta"
If I know I just did something cool, its "WOWWW," which I have to credit to Whitney Reeds, who does it way better.

| OTOH, one of spike's predecessors in epee had a great scream (BAH! - R. Stockton Butler), and another predecessor sounded more like a train (locomative) than any non-train entity I've yet met O.O

| Hey-la
or
Hey-pa-hey-hola
On a slightly off-topic note, some of the Russians (Charikov in particular) yell something that sounds like Oachoa (long o, ch, long o). Does anyone know what it really is, and what it means, if anything?
Just curious.
