This just came out on the AP wire:

ZURICH, Switzerland (AP) _ FIFA opens disciplinary proceedings into Marco Materazzi for his conduct in World Cup final.

¶ 2006 FIFA World Cup Germany

¶ FIFA opens disciplinary proceedings against Marco Materazzi

¶ The FIFA Disciplinary Committee has today (Thursday, 13 July 2006) opened disciplinary proceedings against Italian player Marco Materazzi. The proceedings were initiated in the light of initial statements from French player Zinedine Zidane who, having head-butted Materazzi during the final of the 2006 FIFA World Cup in Berlin on 9 July, has since indicated in an interview that his actions came in response to repeated provocation from the Italian player.

¶ As stated in a media release published on 11 July, FIFA will investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident in detail. As part of the process, Zinedine Zidane will be given the right to be heard by means of a written statement, which must be submitted by 18 July. Materazzi will subsequently be sent a copy of the statement so that he can respond to it. Both players have been summoned to attend a face-to-face hearing before the Disciplinary Committee at FIFA headquarters in Zurich on Thursday, 20 July.

¶ The FIFA Disciplinary Committee is expected to reach a decision later that day, which will be announced in a media release.

Read this article: one of the few ones that tries to put an end to the silly french argumentation in order to make a victim out of the guilty...
Ye, great article! For once, a French guy fights for his pride and all the French are bad losers! I thought that we were only a country of coward persons...

And I really liked the explanations of Zidane's heabutt by the fact that France was going to lose the final and he couldn't bear it. Come on... It was just a human reaction to trash talking. A bad one and Zidane got a red card for it. Normal. Like I said, he deserved it 10 times. He should be banned for a while and he shouldn't get his Best player prize... Period. (by the way, even if I think that, by far, he is the best defender of the world, I have a little problem with giving it to Cannavaro neither, if you take a look at what he did to Henry at the begining of the final. You just have to be fair...)

Now, if saying that trash talking shouldn't find its place in sports and Masterazzi should take his part of responsability in that stupid act makes the Frenchs bad losers, then I am proud of being a bad loser. And I still congratulate Italy for the win. It will be a great champion for 4 years.

It is not a reaction for a profesional player. The headbutt is unacceptable. Now he has red and he goes home. He was a champion and he ruined his fame.

Just to add to the hilarity and hijinks, how about the possibility of a replay of the finals?

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/200...nge/index.html

It won't happen, but the thought is amusing.

Call me insensitive but I don't think he crossed the line at all. What do others think?

You don't think Zidane or Materazzi crossed the line?

Zidane clearly crossed the line. Letting trash talk get to him in such an
important event...stupid. He possibly blew the match for France. Sure that's
debatable and we'll never know for sure but...

If you are referring to Materazzi, I would say he's an ass but I wouldn't say
he crossed the line.

Pretty clever of him to know how to push his button. Not to mention hamming
it up after the head butt.

I think they both crossed the line. Unfortunatly, trash talking seems to be a big part of soccer, and Zidane lost it at the wrong moment. Top level players oftentimes are very emotionally intense and if you know how to push their buttons right you can make them direct it away from focus. I think Zidane must feel like a complete idiot and he deserves punishment, but I feel sorry for him that he lost it at this specific moment(unless he was was just being incredibly selfish).

That's extra funny if you know the results of the last baseball world cup...
but that aside, I'd say there was reason for hope and optimism at the beginning of the tournament, it's just that the U.S. was in the Real Group of Death. If they had been in Mexico's place (which considering the seeding was entirely possible) they most likely would've had a Much Better run.

Germany kicked off (pun intentional) the Women's World Cup today with an 11-0 thumping of Argentina.

I suspect the US will do better in this tournament than in the men's event last summer.
