Really? I thought it was (from memory) more what the French would call a lifted septime (7me) coupé riposte to chest. Italians would call that a mezzocerchio (semicircle) - SG tends to do that rolling a little to pronation on the way through the blade, so could be said to be a prime (1me) coupé.

False-sixte, parry-four riposte.

Also, with regards to Elvis Gregory, the original poster did not get to see Gregory's semi-final bout against a young Sanzo. Now, while Sanzo was wild with the flicks, Gregory hit Sanzo most of the time with nothing more than straight attacks, using timing and distance to make Sanzo miss on the flicks.

I'd imagine Elvis didn't try the same thing with Golubitsky because he was:
(a) a bit more tired (moving back and forth to set up the proper distance is tougher than a constant marching action)
(b) SG is probably pretty darn good against thrust actions (although he managed to make EG miss a bunch of flicks)
(c) Generally, what EG did is called absence of blade. Not all of those actions resulted in flick finishes. A bunch were thrust hits, but he basically held the blade back, perhaps to occasionally draw an AIP from SG and then try to parry and (flick) riposte. I don't think he did much, if any of that.

Speaking of flicks, there has been a definite increase of flicks lately in international fencing. Partly, I think, because fencers are now more committable with the new timing. I watched a Yuki Ota (JPN) vs Peter Joppich (GER) match and was surprised at the number of flicks used by both fencers, especially Ota. I myself have gone back to using flicks more often now that I have adjusted to the change.

I'm sure Roche is planning to raise the contact time as we speak.

A 30 second contact requirement ought to be enough for most juries to award you the touche, right?

Of course, some unsporting fencer might just take a retreat and produce a macro break in the 30 second window.. Curses! A technological solution foiled again!

Please tell me that the flick has not completely dominated the professional fencing world
You might want to do a forum search. There have been many, many threads on the topic of flicking, and nearly every viewpoint has been expressed. Those threads might give you a more thorough answer because the new timings have made the flick less common.
