If you ever watched oly weightlifters in competition, they all exibit great body quickness and power while tossing loads much heavier than themselves over their heads.
Its great conditioning tool for any fencer.
Agree!

Lifting weights are not going to make or brake a fencer(skill, tactics and will to win are most important),but it can make you a better fencer.

Lifting weights is the best cross-training.

I don't know, I feel that reviving ancient, long-dead threads is probably the best way to improve your fencing. Particularly if you do it in a way that adds so much to what was already in the thread. At least it lets me practice my sarcasm while trying to read about fencing. That counts as cross training I am sure.

Well he might not have added anything to the discussion, but I wasn't around to see this thread back then and I for one was extremely impressed by Mark Rippetoe's comments. So much so that, I went to Amazon and bought his book Starting Strength. I am older now and my body isn't as resilient as it was when I was 20. The idea of increasing my core strength through lifting in order to increase that resilience makes a lot of sense to me.

I think there are probably many veteran fencers who could greatly benefit from this sort of cross training.
