Well he might not have added anything to the discussion, but I wasn't around to see this thread back then and I for one was extremely impressed by Mark Rippetoe's comments. So much so that, I went to Amazon and bought his book
Starting Strength. I am older now and my body isn't as resilient as it was when I was 20. The idea of increasing my core strength through lifting in order to increase that resilience makes a lot of sense to me.
I think there are probably many veteran fencers who could greatly benefit from this sort of cross training.
