| Donations - askFred I noticed the "Make a Donation" button on the bottom left corner of the askFred home page. I thought I'd make a donation, since I think this a fantastic, well-run service, and a great source of information. However, I was a bit put off, when I put an amount into Paypal, and then had the system tack on a $30 "shipping and handling" fee. I cancelled the transaction until I can find out a little more about this.
Has anyone out there made a donation? What's the deal?

I tried to fix it and it still seems to be happening. When I first set up that donation button with paypal it worked great. A few people even used it, for which I am eternally grateful.
I very clearly checked the "no shipping" option when setting up the donation button at paypal, and yet there it is, paypal is putting that extra fee in there.
Ugh.
Thanks for the reminder to look more deeply into it!

| Fixed: OK, I think I got it.
Paypal was adding default shipping values from my account's preferences even though the button code explicitly specifies no_shipping.
Duh.
So I killed those preferences. SBGN.
BTW: Emailing me directly is usually a more effective way of resolving troubles with FRED. I just happened to stumble across this thread. Not as reliable.
cheers-

| Wow, the man behind Fred himself. Thanks so much for making Fred available to the fencing community. I can't believe how simple it makes things. |

I've never understood why they don't just put their hair inside the lame', instead of in a precarious pile on top that comes undone as soon as the mask goes on. That's what I do with mine and it takes quite a bit of fencing for it to come out.
Of course, sometimes it does. True story:
Some years ago I was at the Palm Springs NAC watching some later rounds of the Div1WF, and noticed that lots of the women seem to use "I have to fix my hair" as a stall tactic. I remarked to a friend nearby: Quote: |
I love this obvious stalling! For the guys, the classic cheeseball stall tactic is 'Sir, may I tie my shoe?' but for the ladies, it's 'Sir, may I fix my hair', and then they take forever making it just right. Heck, I have long hair, I should try using that tactic; see how well it works for me!
| Then the next day I was fencing the MF event, and close to the end of the pool my hair finally got a bit out of control. The ref asked me to fix it. I took off my mask, and got as far as taking out the hair tie when it hit me: AAAAAA! I'm doing it!!!!
