| New England division question Does anyone know why the New England division isn't running a Junior division championship this year? They have in previous years, but it doesn't seem to be on the schedule this year. |

| The decision was made by the tournament committee to combine the junior and senior division championships to one event.
In the past, they were separate events because they were qualifiers to the sectional tournaments.
Now that you don't have to qualify for sectionals, they felt there was no need to hold both of them anymore. Last year's schedule was a legacy of needing to qualify to sectionals, which is why they were both there. Now they've trimmed the events by one in the spring to make room for something else, and are just having a 'Division Championship' for everyone.
I am not on the tournament committee, so my answer may be incorrect / flawed... but this is what I remember from a conversation with someone who is on the committee.

| Thanks.
I think they should have kept it seperate though, it was a fun event, and they still have a Y10 and 12 div champs even though it's not a qualification path for anything. Though i guess they really couldn't mix in y10 and 12 |

| Its a little different with Y-10 & Y-12 ... They are held on the same weekend, so you're only chewing two potential tournament days.
With the sizes of our tournaments and available venues, you'd either have to run them on different weekends, or in different places. Y-10 and 12 are small enough to fit them both in the same place at the same time.

-w | Ignoring entirely the number of refs and people competent at running events.
IE the JOs/NewEnglands phenomenon.

-w | Actually, that's not what I meant at all. Then again, what I meant was entirely stupid, and me just being selfish and wanting to fence two tournaments instead of just one. So it really doesn't matter. |

| Well really, you get your wish...
The march open that was at PdF is an add to the schedule. The spring schedule from march on used to be just qualifiers and division championships.
so now you get Division championships, the round robin, and the march open.

-w | Except that I'm too sick to fence the round robin, which is just bad luck and sucks, but is no one's fault but my own. |

-B | Except that for some reason apparently I didn't fence it. I can't remember why. Now that's going to bug me. It's too bad too, because it looks like it was a pretty good tournament. |

If you're a slacker you can't expect other people to keep presenting you with more options until you decide to actually compete, now can you? :)

-B | If it wasn't clear in my last post, I was viewing it as an opportunity I didn't take advantage of. Though I would argue that I wasn't a slacker. I checked and the reason I missed it was because of an unavoidable family commitment. so :P |

Any thoughts on Mixed vs. Separate Round Robins, now that you've fenced one of each?

| My comments would be unfair since Women's Epee seems to have turned out to be so much stronger than Women's Foil definitely was and Women's Sabre probably will be. As far as Women's Epee, this was definitely fun and worthwhile. I had a blast. It was well run (very well run). There were definitely a ton of people there who were much, much better than I was. I learned a lot, etc......However, that was for Women's Epee....I am not sure how to make Women's Foil and Women's Sabre that strong....For THEM, a mixed tournament would have definitely been better...I guess you can't please everybody all the time.... |

| I'm not sure how much we could grow the women's side of things by having the tournaments be mixed. Particularly with the (relatively) low cap numbers we have for the Foil and Sabre.
Women's foil certainly was a disappointment, but hopefully next year we can change that. As for women's sabre, we still don't know what will happen there, so I'll reserve comments on that and the men's events until after next weekend.
That said, the Women's sabre event is looking to be MUCH better than the women's foil event was.
I think keeping any of the events mixed would be unfair to both genders, as only half the number of entry slots would be available...
We'll see what happens next weekend.
Thanks for coming, and I'm glad you had a great time.
Registration for next year's event(s) will open on New Years Day.
See you on Saturday.
