I've started an
earlier thread on how people schedule their training prior to competition and some of the posts got me thinking about how people deal with recovery from the stresses of fencing. Modern fencing is a dynamic sport that puts the body under some unusual strains. The movemnet are unnatural and asymmetric and to attain a good level of skill requires lots of repetition.
Competitive fencers generally add extra conditioning workouts to their program in the forma of resistance training and CV work.
After reading the
Fencer's Diet thread I get a feeling that people aren't putting a lot of thought into nutrition and from the
Where do You Hurt thread lots of us have nagging chronic injuries. Are people giving enough thought and time to recovery. Are we seeing physiotherapist or chiropractors regurarly. Looking at nutrition, icing having sports massage etc. using pilates or yoga to balance out the body?
I had a very painful right hip with a limited range of motion. I ignored it for about 9 months after a few initial treatments weren't very successful. But a few trips to a chiro and an aggressive stretching routine are really helping. I'm also making sure that I get one full day off a week and an trying to listen to my body more and differentiate between the tiredness and soreness brought on by training and the achiness and general malaise caused by over training. I also cleaned up my diet alot. Doing this is helping my fencing but also improving how I feel in general.
How are other people dealing with R&R?
