| Epee in Virginia Can anyone recommend a good place to learn competitive Epee in Virginia? I was looking into VAF but apparently they only have competitive programs for foil and sabre.

| Where in Virginia? I've heard good things about DCFC, though Army Fencer could tell you more. |

| DCFC is technically in MD...the question of where you are in VA would be a good one to answer though if you want any real help.

| VAF has a competitive epee program. (I'm in it.) The competitive epee class meets on wednesdays 8-10, fridays 7-9, and sundays 1-3. Free-fencing on tuesdays. |

| The majority of the population of DCFC is epee. It's open 5 nights a week, free fencing starts around 7:30pm and runs until the straglers leave between 10:30 and 11. The heavy nights for epee are Tuesday and Thursday, but there are epeeists of all levels there every night. It's located in Silver Spring MD, about 30 to 45 minutes from NE Manassas. DCFC doesn't have a specific program per se, but the majority of the club is competitive.
ChilePepper mentioned when the VAF competitive program met, but I suspect there are certain requirements to get into it (are there?).
Other clubs worth checking out are Dominion in McLean, which might be the closest, and Olde Town, in Alexandria.
In making your choice, one question that needs to be answered is what you mean by 'competitive'. In terms of coaching that will get you to national competitions, all these clubs have excellent coaches. If you're looking for a population to fence, VAF is the "World's Largest Fencing School" with a handful of national epee fencers, and DCFC has a relatively large concentration of national and international fencers.

Manassas to Silver Spring in 30 minutes?!? Even with no traffic it can't be done...and there is NEVER no traffic in DC area. During the week, leaving around 6pm, got to be an hour and a half drive.

| You're right. You should avoid driving in the DC metro between the hours of 4pm to 7pm daily. If you do, it will take you about an hour to get anywhere, and an hour and a half to cross a bridge. I drive from Connecticut Ave in MD to Fairlakes Parkway VA almost every day. I can be at club in as little as 40 minutes, or as much as 2 hours depending on traffic and when I leave. Quote: |

| Sure there is! Between the hours of 3:30am and 4:00am. At that time, I can make that drive (as if going to Dulles) in a half-hour flat, and only slightly breaking the speed limit. Granted, the club is usually closed at that hours, but you can still make the drive |

-B | I can only imagine the damage that would happen when the car body comes in contact with the 3rd rail... if it weren't made of plastic that is. |

-B | It would help you avoid traffic though... I bet that a lot of people don't do this, and as long as you avoid running into / being run into by a train... you may have found the secret to commuting in your own car in and around DC.
