Darth Foilist is on a distinguished road
Hello, this is Darth Foilist.

Hi, I'm Darth Foilist and i'm...well...a foilist. I started fencing in 2000 and havent regretted it. I fence twice a week ( I know its not much, but all my other days are already full) and have been to the London Youth Games once and the Leon Paul Junior Series (London team Foil, U13) once. Its not much of a competition record but i'm happy with it.

A quick question, the new rule on not wearing anything with pockets has made me chose to buy some breeches from Leon Paul, but i'm not sure wether to get the High quality ones which should last a long time and be quite comfortable to fence in regulary. Then theres the cheaper medium ones which have less quality but might be easier to replace when i go through my next growth spurt and theres the beginner ones that are really cheap but wont last long and probably wont be as comfortable.
What do you think i should do?

Darth Foilist

Welcome!

Alot of decisions are based upon what your fiances are, your a bit young so you'll need to talk to your parents. Personally I fenced in baseball pants for awhile, a bit light but no pockets where the blade can't catch. Places where I live won't complain. I've since moved up to a more 'medium' grade pants, however alot of that was due to the fact I wanted to look more like the other fencers. I just don't see it as a major problem and I fence epee where the whole body is target.

You should wear knickers. They're safer, probably more comfortable, and legal for competition.

(breeches, I think they're called in Britain...)

And Darth Foilist, if you want your question to be answered, you should probably post in the Armory part of the forum, where threads are read more often.

I do now, that was when I first started. Comfort is the same IMO. Yes they offer more protection as it is heavier but if your just doing practice it's not that big of a deal.

If he's doing competitions, it's not a good idea. Also, more protection matters in practice and otherwise. In his situation, he should not get baseball pants.

Places where Darth Foilist fences WILL complain. The BFA has more stingent safety guidelines than the USFA. Not to mention that almost all baseball pants that I've seen used in USFA events were still illegal. I've made a fencer change before.

Yeah, I definately wouldn't go with baseball pants. The meduim grade ones should be fine. Also, welcome to the forums.
