Barry Paul....question re epee blade

Barry;

Donald Benge just gave me an epee to work on that LOOKS like one of your folded ones, but it has some features I've never seen before,

1) In the last inch or so before the shoulder -- where the base of the groove makes that sharp upward bend -- there's a metal plate over the top...looks like it's welded.

2) Instead of the wire channel exiting on the top of the blade, the wire comes out on the BOTTOM of the tang...

Is this a first generation folded blade??

Thanks.

I think so. That matches my recollection of the way they were originally made. I broke the last one of those this year -- it had been sitting in a closet for a while.

I quite liked the wire on the bottom feature when those first came out. Too bad they changed it up.

Don't think I can quite picture this wire setup. Could anyone post a picture/diagram? Sounds interesting

On the original blades the wire ran down the v of the blade the whole way to the end and sat in a channel thet ran through the tang of the blade.

These are almost antiques now! I don't think we have made them like that for at least 10 years.

Given how old Benge is, that's appropriate!

As an armorer, I like the idea that the last cm or so of the blade is covered...keeps the wire from getting cut by the guard, although I'd like the exit hole to be on top. What was the reason for stopping that style?

We made about 2000 blades with the wire coming out the bottom. First shown at the world Championships in Essen 1990?
However it had the following problems
1. Difficult to braze the two parts together without the hole filling up.
2. All the guards had to be filed out as the wire came out the bottom. Fencers did not realize and mounted them any or with the guard upside down.
3. Some inside guard sockets could not take the wire in the underneath position.
4, During gluing the wire, the hole would some times fill up and subsequent re-wiring would involve lots of re-drilling or careful poking with a pointy wire.

So we changed the design.

I thought those would be some of the problems. Thanks for the confirmation.

The blade's been rewired....I took a few pics before starting.
The top surface....you can see the covering at the shoulder

Then there's the hole for the wire...

And the exit on the underside of the tang

You might want to sand away the rust off that blade.
