| 'Cause you're not being paid to cut tangs. More of a leisure activity ( Sam excepted ).

| Yes. Best bet is to hold the blade flat on a table, bench or window ledge ( etc ) with the tang protruding over the edge.

| I too have used the tabletop and hacksaw method. It works especially well if you have another person to help hold the blade. |

| The cause of the ballistic off-cut is the fact you're all using the WRONG tool.
You need one of these: http://www.msen.com/~pwmeek/wl-tools.html
You put the tang through a hole and two plates SHEAR it in two, the off-cut just drops away. In fact, it parts it so nicely that I usually never have any problem just screwing a pommel right onto the freshly cut blade without any filing/grinding of any kind. It's silent, instant, and has a series of holes for various threaded and non threaded rods. I use the un-threaded hole since there's no 6mm on mine. When cutting rod that is threaded into the designated holes, the threads are not damaged at all.
Just use the others for what they're designed for: stealing bikes. |

| Yeah. Or hey, you could buy an oxy-acetylene torch! Just a few hundred dollars, plus gases, of course. You'd really be rockin' then!
Or perhaps a Beverly shear! Only $500 for the B1, $1000 for the B3, plus the cost of replacement blades. Woohoo!
Or a plasma torch! YES! A steal at $1250 or so.

Cough. Hacksaw.

I went out and bought a fishing vest the other day so I could have all my normal tools on hand if I get called to a strip...and now I have to put counter-weights on the pocket in back because it's pulling me forward (njow I know how my wife feels!) |

The one I use is the low step between my garage and kitchen...
And yes, if its a 2" thick piece of metal, I'll probably get out my vice and set it up. For for thinish pieces of metal, it takes just a few seconds to do the job with the hacksaw. |

You ought to put a couple of epee guards in the back pocket of that vest. Should get you some odd looks from across a room.

What's the matter, Purple, the fanny-pack wasn't enough?
My technique for cutting the tang. Find a knee-high flat, sturdy surface (I use an ice-chest, but if I did have a sturdy surface I swear I'd use it). Place the blade on the surface, place the left foot on top of the blade near the edge of the surface, put all you're weight on it, and cut the blade with the hacksaw. Prevents having to have that other person to hold the blade.

| I use a different method than Mergs. (I don't want it known that I sometimes associate with those 'missing links'.) I have a clip permanently attached to my bolt cutters by about 5 - 6" of chain.

I WAS going to have a customized vest, but the material came apart...the fishing vest is fine. Not tricked out like my fencing rollbag is, but it does the job. I ended up getting it a size too large, but I can fix that by folding in the side panels. |

| I like the idea of a customized vest, but if I put all my stuff in there, I'd never be able to stand up. |
