    Father of a new fencer

    hi Everyone,

We live in the Pittsburgh area and my 8 year old son has just taken up fencing. Any sites that would help us out in the start up process would be welcome. I've been to www.usfencing.org.

This looks like a great site.

Welcome! How long until you become one of those fencing dads who decides he might as well give it a try for himself?

It is. It's both fun and very informative, so welcome to the sport and the forum!

And dad, you should try fencing too. It's the greatest sport ever.
    Fencing is my only PvP.

I concur as I'm one of the fencing parents. Welcome to one of the fastest growing segments of the sport - Y's - and I'll bet after you've been going to club for awhile, you'll decide to jump in! There are several other parents on the forum and everybody pitches in (we play pretty well together). As to sites - this is probably the best one. Check out the FAQs and the introduction to fencing sections and then search theses forums 'cause it's probably on here somewhere.

    Enjoy and Welcome!

Actually just this past Sunday, my sons teacher asked if I wanted to suit up and try it. I am very tempted. It looks like a lot of fun!

It is... the nice thing about the sport is that you can begin at almost any age!

    Hi Titan,

My son is learning foil although we've purchased an eppe with his initial kit. He hasn't used it yet though.

Dude! Just suit up and have fun. I noted that at my club there were at least 5 father-son "teams" which both fence at the club. And at least 1 mother-daughter team, and a aunt-nephew team, and a mother-daughter-son team.... Heck, the group class I'm has 3 of them (high school kids and adults)...

This is one of the few sports I know of where the parents and kids can both compete -- and in the same competitions at times.

    Welcome!

This website is definitely a good start for you. You may also want to check out your Division (Western PA I think) and Section (Mid-Atlantic?) websites. You can probably get to them from usfencing.org.

At my club I teach an adult class, which is almost entirely made up of moms and dads of fencing kids. See if there is something like that available to you...

    Good luck!

If your son has reached a competitive level, which hI'm not sure if he has yet, askFred.net will have a lot of information on various tournaments. You should definately take up fencing! Also, I'm not sure if Pittsburgh is in the mid-atlantic section FG33.
