Array Touché! Do people still say this in dry fencing? Is the person who gets hit meant to say it, or the guy who makes the hit, or the presiding guy? I hated every minute of training, but I said, ''Don't quit. Suffer now and live the rest of your life as a champion.'' - Muhammad Ali -

Array In theory it would be the guy getting hit admitting that he'd been hit. And while I have little current exposure to dry fencing (thank god), I don't hear very many people say it during competition at least, and in our neck of the woods few people say it during practice, either. -
I've heard the occaisional person say "touche" in practice. (No accent, meaning it rhymes with...........never mind. There's no "ay" at the end).
The hit person says that. -

Array Linguistically, it makes the most sense for the person who received the touch to say "touché". It comes from the French for "touched", as in "je suis touché", "I was touched". "Touche", on the other hand, is a noun meaning "touch". Theoretically, therefore, it could be said by anyone, indicating "I acknowledge your touch upon me", "I got a touch on you", or by the director, awarding a touch to someone. -

Array Okay. Sorry about the crappy, non-engaging thread - this forum seems a bit slow today, and so am I. :-/ I hated every minute of training, but I said, ''Don't quit. Suffer now and live the rest of your life as a champion.'' - Muhammad Ali -

I learned it as "toosh" as well and it would be from the director. Now it's "touch" from the referee... -

Array you know how people will use touche in a conversation if someone makes a good point? when i'm out with one of my teammates and she over hears someone use in it conversation she will rush up to them and in a very excited voice go "omg! do you fence?! ME TOO!". it's too funny. "I have an excellent idea! Let's change the subject." March Hare -

Pshhh, you're just not paying attention. It's so common where we are that it carries over to the dining halls and has begun to spread around campus. It's kind of funny actually. (At least for saber fencers it's necessary to acknowledge touches anyway) Now all I'm waiting for is the day when the social card usage carries over. Nothing better than giving the G****s a "social" Black Card for being himself at dinner. I now dangle to the left....my tassle. Get your minds out of the gutter.
