At this point, all three weapons have their remise battles, they're just a bit different from each other... saber we have the remise vs. the riposte battle often, or the remise of the line vs. the beat attack, etc. Epee we have the 'traditional' remise battle (remise d'arret and what not), and in foil we have (admittedly the ugliest) remise battles, though I've seen some in WE that aren't much prettier... -

Purple Fencer Man...I think we ALL heard that one when we first started out...I know I did... and I still hear it! It was repreated in Rafael Sabatini's book "Scaramouche" for sure, and probably in the movie as well. -

Array "dogs" by pink floyd makes me think about fencing...especially in the first 2 verses
"You gotta be crazy, you gotta have a real need.
You gotta sleep on your toes, and when you're on the street,
You gotta be able to pick out the easy meat with your eyes closed.
And then moving in silently, down wind and out of sight,
You gotta strike when the moment is right without thinking.
And after a while, you can work on points for style.
Like the club tie, and the firm handshake,
A certain look in the eye and an easy smile.
You have to be trusted by the people that you lie to,
So that when they turn their backs on you,
You'll get the chance to put the knife in." -

From the same movie Scaramouche (1952), screenplay by Ronald Millar, Andre Moreau (played by Stewart Granger) says to his fencing master Doutreval (who can no longer teach him, having been caught doing so by Moreau's arch-enemy Noel, Marquis de Maynes - who is Doutreval's primary student):
"If I can no longer be taught by the man who taught my enemy...then what is more fitting, in a mad world, than to be taught by the man who taught the man who taught my enemy?"
