    SE Sectionals: Predictions?

No pre-registration data are avaialbe, AFAIK, so I'm making some assumptions as to who will be there. This year's event should be big as the Southeast gets ready for the Summer Nationals.

Men's Epee: top 16 (in alphabetical order)
    Ballew
    Brasel
    Bruno
    Bryan
    Caba
    Casper
    Cochrane
    Hoffman
    Kelly, M.
    Lane
    Oliverius
    Parker
    Snider
    Vail
    Vincent
    Zhurkin

As Dennis Miller says: "That's my opinion, I could be wrong."

I predict that someone from Charlotte Fencing Academy will win men's epee.

I predict Gallant from CFA will win Women's foil.

I predict Diaz will beat Zay in the mens foil final.

Bruno and Vail are not fencing, so no need to worry about them.

    For Open ME

    Top 8 (in no order):
Hoffman, Parker, Oliverius, Schroff, Herin, Parrish, Cochrane, Yergler.

Top 8 U-19 ME (in no order):
Herin, Mitchell, Bernstein, Miller, Hammond, Neu, Mckinney, Yergler.

Top 4 U-19 MS (no particalur order)
    Zeichmann, Zeichmann, Cheney, Cheney.

Hao meng wins U-19 MF and makes the 4 in Open MF.
Chris Hammond makes the 4 in u-19 and Open MF.
Phoebe Caldwell wins U-19 and Open WE.
Audrey Barroso wins Open WS (and u-19 WS if she chooses to fence in it).
Simpson makes the 4 in u-19 WE.
Athanas makes the 4 in open WE.

Oops, I did (inadvertently) neglect to consider some fencers from your club/division . There certainly should be at least a few NC fencers in that list.

Does CFA have any uninjured epeeists? Nothing against their skill, they're better epeeists than I am, but last I heard several of them were hurt.

MF: I don't forsee either Diaz or Zay beating Tom Henning if he makes the trip. Wonder if it'll be an A this year.

I wish Gallant luck. A bout between her and Cyndi Lucente would be interesting if Cyndi's making the drive.

Well, Bryan is NC, assuming you mean the Bryan that took 5th last year.

Most of the CFA epeeists (except the A's) were at our tournament Saturday and I saw no injuries.

Good to hear they're healthy again. I wonder how much of a VA contingent we'll see. I mean, definitely Hoffman and probably Caba. Maybe O'Neil?

Then again, I don't know what we'll see out of AL or how much GA will show.

Zhurkin isn't gonna be there either. He's graduating from Vandy's business school so he's got a lot going on.

I don't want to predict my event, so I'm gonna skip over Men's Epee'.

U-19 Epee': (top 4 in no order) Ballew, Bernstein, Herin, McKinney

Men's Foil: (top 4 in no order) Diaz, Meng, Hammond, Zay

U-19 Foil: (top 4 in no order) Hammond, Meng, Yu, Jones

U-19 and Men's Sabre: Cheney, Cheney, Zeichmann, Zeichmann

Gotta love these threads! Its interesting to see how limited the viewpoint is. In just checking open ME there's a couple of guys consistently making 2nd round of pools Div 1 NACS that aren't even mentioned in top 8. I'm sure the same holds true for the other events. I guess we just mostly think of the guys we see the most and tend to forget the rest.

Then make a prediction, we'd love to hear your take on it.

EDIT:: I'd also like to say that I think one of the favorites for this tournament will probably be Scott O'Neal.

Thanks, but I'll pass. I'd be wrong since I only know a few names. Just interesting to see that some names are left off lists even tho they do OK at NACS. I wonder why? Is it that 'out of sight out of mind thing' or there are real strong local fencers that can't attend NACS or ???? Just wondering if the locals know something us peons don't.

Part of the question is who is going to show up. I mean, we're really talking about Div 1A and Junior qualification. So if you're on junior points, you don't need to fence. If you're on senior points, why bother with 1A when you can fence Div 1?

Also, in talking with VA and NC fencers, several of them who can get in on points or possibly on appeal feel why bother to travel farther to sectionals then they'll have to travel for nationals. Can't say that I blame them..

I'll be hoping to scrape into the top 25% in MF. If not, it's reffing and coaching for me in Atlanta.

Scott O'Neal (Men's Epee), Cyndi Lucente (Women's Foil), Beth Larson (Women's Epee), Sue Mahon (Women's Epee), and Carl Knoch (Men's Foil), all from Richmond Fencing Club in Virginia, will be competing at Sectionals this weekend. I doubt Aaron Caba will come, he's been injured and hasn't fenced in many competitions this year. Jeff Snider, Head Coach of Richmond Fencing Club, will not be coming to Sectionals to fence or Referee.

I know of several other Va. Division fencers who plan to attend.

Good luck to everyone...especially my teammates and my wife.

Good point. The Jacobson sisters, for example, won't have a chance at becoming the SE WS Champion because they will probably stay home this weekend to train for Div I WS.

By which logic it's doubtful that either Ziechmanns or Cheneys would fence saber...maybe for 1As certainly not juniors
