There might be a movie in the works about Peter Westbrook and his
foundation. This page has a bit more information.

i don't know if it would be possible or not but i would be extremely disappointed if they did come out with a movie where the previews looked good, but the movie was a sham. I recently watched a movie called murderball that was about paraplegic rugby players that turned out to be a documentary of sorts about an Olympic sport.

There already is a "crazy" fencing movie.. It's called By The Sword.
"The Head Crusher likes visa cards." The man smiles. "He slathers peanut butter on them and eats them." He shakes his head. "Weird, but then, most everything is weird out here - present company excepted, of course."

Are you kidding? Penguins be damned, that was easily the best documentary of the year, and one of the best movies, period.

It was irreverent, funny, inspiring, and had some crazy athleticism on display ... from quadrepelegics!!

I agree, but that's only two of us. And they need more people than that for an audience.

Seriously? Quadriplegics? But they can't move their arms or legs.
The solution to your problem is to fence another weapon.

Or, in some cases, feel pain in their arms or legs. They're pretty intense.

I don't want Hollywood touching fencing at all, it has a way of making such things disasterous. Take for example the horrible fencing scene in the latest bond film. It completely butchered and maimed the sport, as any, I feel, normal film would.

It would take a lot of care and precision to be done well, perhaps have fencing as an aside in a character study of a certain character, which would be a circumstance it would much easier be done well in.

The fact of the matter is for nonfencers fencing can be extremely dull. I've had significant others, family, friends, all end up quite bored and extremely confused when visiting tournaments not understanding what touch is what touch. I realize if I didn't fence sabre and they didn't have to understand right of way (epee) life would be a tad bit easier in that aspect. It's very hard to understand subtle brilliance in an action when you really have no clue what timing and distance is.

A documentary in the vein of murderball would, although, be quite enjoyable, although I doubt fencing is far up the list for a documentary. Most people don't know, don't care, and never will have much to do about fencing. Fencing seems not to have that quirky allure of quadripeligic rugby, being a seeming loud and harsh sport, something quite unknown. Murderball woudlnt' have worked just about Rugby; it was also quite aboug quadapeligia. Perhaps there could be a paralympic fencing documentary, but I doubt it'd help the sport out all that much. Fencing does not have the best pr....

I doubt I'll ever see a fencing movie I like in major release...and I suppose I just have to accept that.

If you look at films like bring it on and stick it (which are pretty much the same movie) it's a comical look at this bizzare subculture where everything revolves around cheering/gymnastics. It's poking fun at their own audience- and it works. If it's done in that vein, it might work. To the rest of the world, leaping and hopping about on a narrow strip of wood in tight white body suits and floppy car antennas is already a pretty silly thing. Wouldnt be hard to play off of that as well.

Look at it this way, EVERYONE has played dodgeball or knows what it is. At my daughters middle school of 450-500 there are exactly 2 fencers and 100+ cheerleaders/gymnasts. Multiply that by all grade/middle/high schools in the US and you have an instant audience...

Take the entire world fencing community to the fencing movie and you have not even broken even! And the outsiders won't understand what it is they are doing on the screen.

i would think, knowing movie makers, that fencing would be utterly completely f-ing destroyed! they would totally dramatize it into exactly what it's not, and then fencing would have an even wierder reputation, and we as true fencers would be really mad. but it would be too late. personally, if they did make a fencing movie like that, i would see it only to know what i would have to defend myself against from non fencers whose only knowledge is from that movie.

    Fencing TV Series...

I used to see a poster hanging in a Chinese video store in Philly. It was an ad for a show called, "Hearts of Fencing". On the poster is a bunch of teen-aged fencers standing prominently in their fencing gear. To me it looked like a very cheesy TV series/teen drama (aren't they usually one and the same?). My curiosity (and ability to find cheese amusing) resulted in eventually entering the video store to see if I could actually rent it. I believe the man said there were no subtitles or something and it ended up that I did not rent it. Has anyone ever seen this show? I'd be curious to hear the review... If anyone wants to see the cover- I found it on www.ebay.co.uk. Just search for "Hearts of Fencing". (Or if this works: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/TVB-Series-Hea...QQcmdZViewItem)

As far as a fencing movie, I'd love to see a great fencing documentary made. The non-fencing world I believe needs some education... It seems that so many times when a person that does not fence realizes you DO fence they have so many questions (and so many misconceptions). I would love to see a great fencing documentary that would contain commentary and footage that would not bore the fencing world while enlightening and exciting the rest.

    Sunshine

"Sunshine" starring Ralph Fiennes is the story of three generations of a Jewish family in Hungaria. Fiennes plays the father in the 1880's (approx), his son in the WWII era and his son in more recent times. The WWII era son is the Hungarian sabre fencing champion Adam Sors who goes on to win Olympic Gold in the Berlin Olympics. This is based on a true story. It's not a "fencing movie", but the fencing sequences are good and plentiful in the middle portion of the movie. Be warned, there is some unusual behavior in the relationships of the characters, some rather uncomfortable circumstances anyways. Probably not a kid movie for the adult-oriented content and besides the drama-heavy plot would probably bore most kids away anyways. I liked it, give it a thumbs-up so if you get the chance, rent it or see it.

    Kirk

PS - gents, you could probably score some points for bringing this one home as an obligatory "chick-flick". It may not be one, but YOU TRIED, RIGHT?

Of course it was. It had Joe Don Baker. He's the greatest actor since Lee Van Cleef.

There's also The Swan (1956) w/Alec Guinness. It has a full fencing lesson. It also teaches us the "valuable" lesson that following one's station in life is more important than happiness.

Googling hearts of fencing on google video will produce results of about 10 episodes. The fencing is AWESOME!!
