It's very good it's very long and it's very sad. It was released in the US last yesr, mostly to art film houses.

The center part of the story focuses on a Hungarian sabre fencer.

Ralph Fiennes is excellent, but no one will ever nominate it for the "Feel-good Movie of the Year" award.

It was called "Sunshine" in the U.S.-- "A Taste of Sunshine" was a working title that had shown up in some early publicity. Comes from the original name of the family in the film-- Sonnenschein-- and the tonic drink upon which the family business and fortune was built. It is long and slow moving at times, but I didn't find it to be tedious. I'd imagine that it's out on video/DVD in the U.S. by now.

I saw this movie last night. The fencing was very good. The movie itself is awesome. I would recommend renting it!!!

    Hi
Yes, I saw it a number of weeks ago and it was an EXCELLENT movie, not a happy movie but still brilliant. Well made, well scripted, well acted. The subject matter was dealt with sensitively and with a degree of honesty that was astounding.

It seems like people either love this movie or were bored to tears by it. I fall into the second category.

While I was impressed with the points the director was trying to convey, I wish there was more insight into the characters. The only way you knew where someone was coming from was if they TOLD you what was on their mind. Otherwise, they were all fairly opaque. People seemed to fall in and out of love for no apparent reason. Major characters were killed off almost dismissively (with obvious exceptions, of course).

The fencing scenes were really fun to watch, though. They seemed pretty realistic. Does anyone know who did the the actual fencing? Anybody we may have heard of? I'm sure it wasn't the actors.

Actually, I really liked this movie. Of course, it is not the type of movie where you just can figure out what's going to happen from the beginning but, then again, maybe that what makes it interesting.

It also gives great insight into one tormented period of history that everyone should keep in the back of their minds.

I liked the fencing scenes, even though the fencing itself is poorly filmed, and the actors don't seem to really go at it, but then again, I don't know much about hungarian sabre in the 20s-30s...

    • Epee is the Louis Vuitton bag of fencing: only the best can get it, and the rest of the masses must content themselves with cheap knockoffs (sabre, foil)
    • To not recognize the power of the French grip is to be in denial

I rented this last night based on the chatter here. I enjoyed it! (and the fencing was definitely a bonus... even if it was SABRE!) ;-)
