What is sharing?
-
too much is never enough!
-
What ever people decide to share is their problem.
-
It depends on what they share.

Array How much sharing is too much? I am constantly surprised by how much people share about their personal lives on the internet. The same internet billions of other people(strangers no less) surf every day and night. Now I don't see any thing wrong with this...but how much is too much?
Granted the whole Riverton thing was leaked on My Space, I still don't feel the need to know what some guys cat puked up on his kitchen floor.

Array I sometimes lie about my own age/sex/location. Sometimes for fun, sometimes because I think people are creeps. lol -
If someone tried hard enough, they could probably find out nearly anything they wanted to about me.
But I don't think it will be a problem. -

Array I actually don't do anything to hide who I am here. After someone guessed who I was just from mentioning I was in Savannah and figured out who the new kid in Savannah was, I figured with fNet I might actually stand a fairly large chance of meeting a lot of the forumites.
So yeah I probably overshare here. Of course I clicked the poll without reading the post and said that I didn't know what sharing is. AND I DON'T KNOW WHAT SHARING IS. I HAVE NEVER, AND WILL NEVER SHARE ANYTHING ON THE INTERNET! let's hope the RIAA can't figure out how to highlight anything!! ^_^ -

Array I'm no secret. Hi mr stalker. "I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. And from this side only! The flight of a half-man, half-bird. Dinosaurs nuzzling their young in pastures where strip malls should be. Cookies on dowels. All those moment, lost in time. Gone, like eggs off a hooker's stomach. Time to die" -Phil Ken Sebben -

Array Probably the two main areas to avoid oversharing are Financial-Identity Theft, and (stalking). Most of you young adults don't have any finances to speak of, so you are fairly safe from being exploited in that regard.
The stalking aspect has more potential for some of you than others (eg. DFP). I am not too familiar with MySpace, but one of my coworkers was shaking her head at her niece's website, which makes her look like "sixteenyearold for hire". I think there are an uncomfortably large number of weirdos in the world, and as a Dad, it worries me. I wanted to get lucky when I was sixteen too, but as a parent, especially these days, you really don't want your child being careless and getting harmed.

Array Personally I wouldn't publically share personal information such as:
- real name
- address
- phone number
- email address
- anything financial/security related (i.e. bank accounts/passwords etc.)
Am also careful which photos I post (something the under-18s should be particularly careful about - in what can be a sad, sad world ).
It is quite funny, some of the British Fencing officials on the British Fencing Forum get openly mad that a lot of people use anonymous pseudonyms on forums - apparently we should all use our real names...

Boo Very true.
I've tried to educate a few people over time. I hope that the message is getting through. Similar Threads -
