    one touch at a time

at the usacfc i bought a book called "one touch at a time" by aladar kogler. ive read about a third of it so far and its *amazing*. it focuses on the mental/spiritual aspect of fencing and includes references to buddha, yoga, and meditation. its very interesting and if you're looking for a new way of looking at fencing, this book is definatley worth it.

    has anyone else read this?

I haven't read it yet, but I have had it recommended without reservation by some very solid fencers and coaches.

fencing is about distance and timing. No mysticism needed.

fencing is probably one of the most mentally challenging sports. it is much more complicated than distance in timing. most of the game happens in your head. this book conditions you to fence your best from a mental standpoint.

I suppose we are looking at this from opposite sides of the spyglass. I see it as all mental elements ( concentration, judgement, envisioning the fight ect.) are all preparations to execute distance and timing. The only rule that matters is hit him before he hits you. The two things that control that is distance and timing. Footwork, bladework, body positioning...all those things help to control distance and timing. Bottom line, any type of mystical meditation as it relates to budhism, taoism, christianity or whatever, are all things that a person might do if they feel it will help them fight better. And the fight always comes down to the elements of distance and timing. One person wins because they stuck the other person first. That's all that counts.
