show of hands, who takes their equipment with them on the road even when *not* specifically going to an away event (eg out of town on business and want to fence wherever you're at)?
i'll be on the road at the end of april and will happen to be in town at the same time that my old salle is having a competition. while i believe my present level of inadequacy sufficiently answers the question "do i really want to spend half my trip getting whupped by much better fencers?" (not an exaggeration), i wondered if other people even consider taking gear along for the prospect of fencing on vacation. is it me? do i just have a deep, dark obsession with this sport?
...and is that really a bad thing?

| I did it once when I went to a conference in Florida - looked up a little local club, went, paid a floor fee, had a nice evening fencing, and they all took me out to dinner afterwards.
We get people coming into our club too. We welcome them and try to provide some competition.

| I actually took my fencing gear on two separate business trips to the same town. Before I left, I e-mailed the club and they told me where they met and what time. The first time I flat out couldn't find them. The second time, it started sleeting and the roads were pretty icy so I bailed out. I guess I'm O for 2. The road to hell is paved with good intentions... |

| Took my gear with me when I was deployed to Bosnia and was planning on doing the same for business trips to Germany and Russia (before they were cancelled! Damit!). Since I have now accepted a position with the Reserves in DC, I'll most likely be bringing it with me when I travel there for drill and Annual Training. Several of our club members have done the same when they go on business trips.

| As a matter of fact, I posted a query here about finding a club to visit while I was going to be in Vancouver for a business trip for two weeks. Dragoneye was nice enough to respond, and I've had the opportunity to fence with her club twice already, and hopefully this evening...
It was the best thing I could have to done to bring my equipment with me... Sure beats sitting in my hotel room watching pay-per-view every night! The only downside is that I have enjoyed visiting the Salle so much, that I don't want to go back home to mine in Texas! ;-) |

| Hi-
I'm planning on spending April in the Orlando area and I'll be bringing my gear along. Anyone know where I should be looking to fence while I'm there? I'm an sabre/epee fencer.
Thx.

| Whenever I think I'll get a chance on vacation to do at least some footwork, I usually try to bring my fencing equipment. Hey, ya never know whether there's any fencing where you are!

| There a guy from Detroit who stops by to fence whenever business brings him to town. Last time he showed he'd come straight from the airport. Dedicated or what! Anyway, he's a great guy and we're always happy to see him. If anyone else going to be in Newmarket, Ontario on a Monday night, drop me a line.
