I find myself shaking my head at so many of the statements being made by those involved in these efforts. Like the one in the story Gav linked: "Tomorrow we vote". Well, rather! On April 10th, the immigrant march in my city was estimated at above 300,000 people. The organizing groups put together voter registration tables at the protest. They registered all of 121 new voters. Gee, politicians throughout the land must be trembling in fear of the awesome power of this "sleeping giant"...
On Monday, one participant was quoted as saying that she wanted her children to know that their mother is not a criminal. Apparently she thinks it acceptable to teach her children to prefer pleasant lies to unpleasant truth, because she is in the country illegally and she is a criminal. Not a dangerous one, of course. Not one who herself threatens society. But a criminal nonetheless.
The ones who really inspire me to disgust are the ones wearing the t-shirts reading "I'm illegal. So what?" |
In LA the traffic on my drive to work was pleasantly light. At lunch, most of the restaraunts seemed to be open ond functioning fine. Coming home, though, I had to drive right through the area where an after work demonstration was located and it was a real mess. I had to detour through Beverly Hills which was totally unaffected, except the big houses were probably a bit messier than usual.
I have to say that, even though I'm usually pretty much a lefty, I find that I'm not very sympathetic towards these demonstrations. As others have pointed out in earlier posts, I didn't hear about any demonstrations in Mexico City, Guatamala City, San Salvador or Tegucigalpa. There was one in Tiajuana, but it was only a boycott of stores on the American side of the border. This is really misplaced anger. The struggle shouldn't be based here. In spite of all the American flags being waved, most of the undocumented immigrants I have spoken to (I speak spanish) or heard interviewed unapologetically claim allegiance to their home countries. That doesn't bother me in and of itself, but I would like to see these fair weather patriots focus their fervor where it belongs and where it will do the most good.
