Array Just a reminder... If you want to book cheap accomodations at UBC (the event site) the official cut-off is Sunday April 30th.
To avoid scrambling around for a place to stay much later, you may want to book this now!

Array There's only 3 weeks left to register for this World Cup (if you don't want to pay late registration fees).
REGISTRATION DEADLINE is May 26, 2006
The deadline for onsite accommodations has passed however, last year I think some people were able to get accommodations past the deadline. Beer, it's whats for dinner! ~ a young snowboarding Canadian The meek don't want it! ~ sticker on a rock band's guitar -

Array If you've made it to god's country already... then check-out Westjet for any flights within Canada.
If you're coming from the US... I have no idea what to recommend. Beer, it's whats for dinner! ~ a young snowboarding Canadian The meek don't want it! ~ sticker on a rock band's guitar -

I would check with the organizers to see if you can get accommodations on site... although it is past the deadline, it's worth a shot! Beer, it's whats for dinner! ~ a young snowboarding Canadian The meek don't want it! ~ sticker on a rock band's guitar -

Array I got asked a good question....
Can anyone enter this (if they have an FIE license), or do you need to be officially delegated by your country?
It would appear that you just need a FIE Licence as per the Peter Bakonyi International World Cup web site registeration information below:
REGISTRATION DEADLINE : May 26, 2006
ELIGIBILITY: All competing fencers have to have a FIE License for the 2005-2006 season. Canadian fencers can purchase a license through the CFF at: http://fencing.ca/2005-06_fie_licenses.htm .
American fencers must purchase an FIE license through the USFA.
REGISTRATION FEE:
$100 Cdn paid and received before May 26, 2006
$200 Cdn from May 27 to June 2, 2006 ( late entries)
Please note that no entries will be accepted after these dates.
ENTRY CANCELLATIONS:
No refund, unless:
Due to medical condition only with doctor's certificate = $80.00 Cdn
Please note that NSF transactions will be charged $20.00 Cdn.

Array You should!
I just got out of a meeting today and it appears this will be the last year we will be holding the World Cup in Vancouver. Beer, it's whats for dinner! ~ a young snowboarding Canadian The meek don't want it! ~ sticker on a rock band's guitar -

Array Accommodations If you’re looking for accommodations for the World Cup here are some ideas:
1) Call the number provided at http://www.pbinternational.ca/ It is the closest and cheapest rate available.
2) Failing that, I would look at the below links for hotels off of 12th Avenue or Broadway (which is 9th Avenue). The 99 UBC bus runs along Broadway. Here’s a link to the PDF showing it’s route. http://www.translink.bc.ca/bus/28/routemap/r099.pdf
Here’s a link to tourism Vancouver: http://www.tourismvancouver.com/visi...ommodation.php
Here are some hotels. http://www.shaughnessyvillage.com http://travel.yahoo.com/p-hotel-346617-biltmore_hotel-i This is not in a great area. Most of Vancouver is fairly safe. As a woman, I would still walk alone in this area but be caution. It’s a bus ride away from UBC… but cheap.
Best Western
Uptown Hotel
205 Kingsway, Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, V5T 3J5 Phone: 604-267-2000 Toll Free Reservations: 888-234-9111 Fax: 604-872-6072 http://www.ichotelsgroup.com/h/d/hi/1/en/hd/yvrbw http://www.plaza500.com/default-b.htm
3) Bed and Breakfast places are another good option. I picked the following to be close to UBC. You would still have to take a bus to UBC, but it would be a shorter ride. The Kitslano area is very nice. With lots of beaches and great restaurants. I would try negotiating the rates with these places, as they may be willing to book a room at a cheaper rate rather than let it go empty for the weekend. http://www.treehousebb.com/rates.html http://pennyfarthinginn.com/rooms.html http://www.aderacottage.com/ http://www.betweenfriends-vancouver.com/ http://www.camelotinnvancouver.com/ http://www.vancouver-bc.com/angelcottage/ http://www.cherubinn.com/rooms.html http://www.chocolatelily.com/rooms.html Beer, it's whats for dinner! ~ a young snowboarding Canadian The meek don't want it! ~ sticker on a rock band's guitar -

Array The Canadian Fencing Federation has told us this will be the last year they will provide funding. *In my opinion* it appears our national organization will rather spend money in it's own backyard. *shrug*... but that's my opinion.
Unless we're able to come up with the amount we were getting in a grant from other sources... it'll be our last year. Beer, it's whats for dinner! ~ a young snowboarding Canadian The meek don't want it! ~ sticker on a rock band's guitar -

Array That's true... we'll see if the Carl Schwende Junior Worlds get cut as well next year.
Another odd thing... I wonder why the PB World Cup isn't a required tournament for our elite fencers? Many are going anyway... but I'm surprised our National organization doesn't include a Canadian World Cup as one of the events that their Canadian athletes must attend. Probably because it isn't nearly at the strength that the rest of World Cup requirements are.
While some events in the PB were fairly strong none were at the level usually found ex. last year it was largely Canadian and American fencers looking for their first World Cup experience. -

Array What do you think of the list this year? The first year was very international. Last year surprised me that there were so many Americans considering they were in the middle of their Nationals. This year there's still a lot of North Americans, but quite a few people from other countries... Iceland and Australia are two surprises. Last qualifying one before Olympics...

It was without a doubt the strongest event.
However, others, such as Men's Foil had merely a handfull of strong international fencers. ex. Tomer Or, Bissdorf, the Russians.
This year's list looks like it has all the heavy hitters coming in for each weapon.
ME: Milanoli, Rota, Fiedler, Limardo,
MF: Deev, Ganeev, Joppich, Sanzo,
The other events look equally strong.
It's too bad that the PB may face cancellation after recieving a favourable response from the international community. -

Array The women events look strong as well....
As for cancellation... the organizers are looking for alternate funding. It will be great if they manage to pull it off. Beer, it's whats for dinner! ~ a young snowboarding Canadian The meek don't want it! ~ sticker on a rock band's guitar Similar Threads -
