| my collection of weapons deepens! but so do a couple questions.
today my friend just gave me a sabre and antique foil. only problem is, the sabre was made by his friend (the blade is the real thing, but the hand guard, grip and such is made by him). can i use that thing for practice?
also, the blade of the antique one broke off about an inch from what it should be, but can't i just throw a plug on the tip of it and call it dandy?
thanks for any help.

Or at least the general interpretation, which is often times more important.

| Post a picture and we can give better answers.
As to the broken blade....do you WANT the end to punch through the rubber and stick you?? If you can round the end off and then thread it 3.5 X 0.6 (metric) I can get you a little metal flange that will hold the rubber tip. |

It will make a dandy wall-hanging, but do not even think about using it to bout. If this isn't what you meant, then I apologize for the histrionics. |

I totally agree with HDG, don't try to use either of those weapons in practice. Fork over the $20 for a new, safe practice foil. Leave your romanticisms where it doesn't involve the safety of others.

| There are a number of requirements of the material rules relating to blades, including sabre. If I see a truly odd blade (home-made?) you can be assured I will verify it passes shims, length and if I can find a good armorer, flexibility. |

yeesh everyone here is freakin touchy.
ok, im not dumb. i would fix it up with a brand new rubber baby buggy bumper hoonan that you need to have on the weapon. im not going to go around stabbing people with a broken blade!

| It's not touchy when we're talking about the safety of fencers on strip. Statistically fencing is actually one of the safer sports someone can participate in, but that's because of the fairly rigorous rules regarding safety equipment...

| Piling On Once a blade is broken, that is the end of its fencing life. A rubber tip will not stop sharp steel from going through and killing someone.
Buy a new blade, which isn't all that expensive, and put it on with the antique foil and guard. Then you will have the best of the old and the new.
Or hang it on the wall, make up a good story about how it broke, and call it done. |

| I'll echo -- once the blade is broken, its an ex-blade, not to be used for fencing again.
On the other hand, you can take the weapon, and mount it up over the fireplace on a nice display. That way in about 20 years, you can lean up against the fireplace with your drink in your hand and point to it and say tp your adoring audience ... "And that one was broken by McCluskey -- a devil of a fencer was he! Why he and I were finishing off in the finals when my weapon broke and...."
But seriously -- a broken blade leaves a sharp edge on the tip. It may not seem much, but a good thrust into someone's ribs may push the sharp edge right through the rubber guard on the tip. You really really really dont want to risk that. Get a new blade.... |

| Eh. My coach used to give lessons with a sabre the blade of which had lost its tip 3 times. Heat the stump, grasp with needlenose visegrip pliers, make a new loop. Quench. Reheat, let cool slowly.
But with ( dry ) foil and epeé blades, you can't create a new flat end very readily. I suppose you could rethread a broken electric tip.
Most blades break off so short that it's useless ( almost said 'pointless' ) to try to fix them. |
