    Name on Uniform at Nationals

Ok, I've searched and have only found more questions.

I've qualified for Summer Nationals. I assume I will need my name on my Jacket. If I read correctly, the Letters should be Block Style between 8 and 10 cm tall.

Is there any width regulation? Will I need my name on my leg also? Also, will I need "USA" on my uniform anywhere? Do you guys recommend embroidery over Stenciling?

    Thanks a lot.

You need your name on EITHER your leg OR your back. USA is not necessary for national tournaments. I am not aware of any width requirements, but that dosn't mean there aren't any. I have no opinion of embroidery vs. stenciling.

Side note: if you fence epee, get your name on your back. For foil or sabre, get it on your leg. That way, you don't have to get each new lame you buy re-lettered. This assumes you're not a freak and buy new fencing pants less frequently then you buy new lames.

Thanks a lot. Yeah, Epee here so I'll go for jacket.

Anybody know about width requirements? Or opinions of stencil vs stitching?

The name should be in all capitals in blue. You should use a regular font for names that are not too long. Use condensed if there are many letters. It should fit between the shoulder seams. Use a font like Franklin Gothic medium on Windows computers.

You can letter it yourself if you are neat. Print it out in Landscape mode on your computer and just blow it up to the correct size. Use a blue Sanford Sharpie to outline the letters and then fill them in solid. Using a regular font, the width of the lines will be a little less than one cm. Just make sure it is between 8 and 10 cm high.

If you arrive the day before you fence at Nationals you can get one of several vendors to put your name on. If you do have it done there, also get the USA. It is not pretentious to do so even if you have not fenced much. In fact it is more noticeable if you don't get the USA.

    Almost everyone gets stenciled names.

Since you are an Epee fencer, your best bet is to get your name on your back between shoulders. As for stenciling vs. embroidery, it's up to how you use your jacket. Do you keep your competition jacket as well as a practice jacket? How badly do you sweat? (we all do, but there are those who are truly talented at this)

You can get your uniform/lame stenciled at almost any NAC/Nationals/JOs these days. Plan on arriving early on the day before your competition date, at the latest, and leave your stuff at Marx Enterprise table. They'll have it ready before you know it. Advantage is that getting it done is an easy process. Disadvantage is that over time, it will fade away, and in worst case there will be some "bleeding" of color.

You can also get a custom embroidery done at Ye Olde Armourer. Depending on how fancy you want your uniform to look like, you can go beyond a simple lettering of your name on the back. You also have an option of having your name/country embroidery done on a piece of white fabric and transfer it to a different uniform when you get a new one. Or from jacket to leg, in case you pick up Foil and/or Sabre down the line. You can either ship your stuff to them, and they'll get it done and send it back to you before you know it. Or you can have it done at the Nationals. Very fine work.

Just sit back, breathe, and follow these simple steps:

Most local Embrioary can only do letters up to 3inch in height where we can do it to the full 10 cm because I went in and modify the program we use to go to the 10 cm in height. Like I say we are fencers and referees and a national know armourer. yes i read the rule book once a week just for the fun of it.

At present there is no width requirement for the USFA, but you might be prepared for what is now required for FIE and probably will be adopted by the USFA. The width of the stroke of each letter is 1 - 1.5cm depending on the length of the name. As was said, since you are Epee go with the jacket, not the breaches and you are not required to have USA for USFA competitons.

Just sew the patch on normally, but you should make sure it will not snag or catch a blade, so keep the stiches close and tight.

Just to clarify everything... Say hypothetically I fence all three weapons. Can I just get the name stenciled on my rear leg and have everything accounted for (i.e. is just the rear leg enough for all weapons)?

Also, is this the requirement for international competitions as well, or do you have to have to name stenciled on the lame for international?

This is an extremely ambitious post, but I know you crazy rule-book readers will have a ball with it.
    Just push the button!

On USFA events only you can have it on the Back Leg. International on the lame and country color on the legs

For USFA competition ONLY, back leg is sufficient in all three weapons.

For International competition, on the back required.
