Didn't you know?! It's of CRITICAL IMPORTANCE that you are equipped with removable tattoos!!!!!!!!
When you have three Romulan Warbirds blocking the escape route, Worf has an emotional breakdown about his childhood toy, Riker announces he's gay, Data's positronic brain gets a virus, and Geordi quits because he's had just one too many imminent warp core breach.... Just sit back, breathe, and follow these simple steps:

When I attended the seminar, Derek Cotton had a set of cards with the penalties printed on the back of them. I'd love to find a set like that and I'm working on laminating a set for myself. If someone sells cards like that, I'd love to know because I'm not much of a DIYer and would prefer to buy a set.

Poses problems for the spectators. Same reason that you keep your cards separated rather than in a stack. In this case you show the fencer a yellow card for having just presented a faulty weapon and his/her coach/mother/best-friend-from-out-of-town sees you awarding a black card.

Not to mention does not look like the official FIE picture of how to award a penalty card.

Presumably all of the clinic-givers do.

Presumably Derek hasn't been recommending the temporary tats on hands as a means of awarding cards that Tim (jokingly) suggested. :)

I didn't see them on the web site. Are they still available?

Derek covered how to insure you didn't give out the wrong card by advising those of us at the seminar to lay the cards on the table where the fencers could see them. The yellow card goes into the upper left, outer pocket of your jacket. The red one goes in the outer pocket at arm level. The black one goes INSIDE the jacket (or in the shirt pocket inside the jacket).

Thus, the fencer knew exactly what you were reaching towards.

I like that idea. I also like the idea of having a reference on the back of the cards. I'd like to keep a set of these with me at practice for those times when questions arise.

For my cards, I went to my local big box home improvement store (home depot or the like) and got formica/countertop samples. They are the right color, very rigid/durable and they are free. Also the Formica ones have a little hole cut in them so they can be tied together somehow until you need them.

Tourney organizers, want to make for happy refs? Put some of these free cards, a sharpened pencil, tiny notepad/paper, a small pack of advil/excerdin and some mints or gum in a small bag and hand them out as referee survival packs. If your venue/division permits, a little airline bottle of booze helps to! A big thanks to Dave Copeland at OON for this idea. Dave knows how to make for happy refs!

Sometimes you have improvise. I was directing am epee bout this weekend....failed shim, yellow....guy runs across the gym to get his 2nd weapon...surprised to get the red card when he gets back.

Either that, or he was wondering why I was holding up my Ralph's Club card.....

You can grab ones from a paint store. and they have different shades of yellow, red and black. Depends how non-conforming you want to be compared to the other referees. Hmmm maybe a bright pink for a red. Would that work? Or just from a hardware store where they do everything like kitchen bench tags too or wallpaper. Ive been and grabbed heaps they dont mind... much
