    I'm a fencing n00b, but I love it.

Hello, my name is Angwilwileth, or Angie for short. I discovered fencing about 3 months ago at my local community college. The only weapon they teach there is foil, but I hope to learn epee and saber sometime in the future. I have yet to fence in competition, but I look forward to it immensely.

In things besides fencing, I am an inveterate Tolkien nut, who has read Lord of the Rings at least 10 times. My screen name is Elvish. If you can figure it out, you are smarter then me.
I also love Star Wars (just the old ones ) and the Ender books by Orson Scott Card.

My one question is this. How do all you people who wear glasses deal with them while you fence?

Mine are always going askew every time I put on or take off my mask.
    Any help would be appreciated.

Ah, A fellow community college fencer with specs appeal. How I deal? I ordered my own mask, and one that fit. Plus I adjusted my frames and stretched my mask a bit to accomodate, but it really just takes practice. Or you can order contacts, but they kinda creep me out. I'd rather just stick with my glasses. Besides, I like the way they look.

A question for you, Angie: How can you get through the first LOTR book? I was 300 pages in when I started to fall asleep.

Edit: Ah! I forgot to add, I take my mask off by pulling forward from the back instead of up from the front. Impromper form, maybe, but its easier on my glasses.

Edit2: Oh, and Welcome. Don't be a stranger, feel free to make more posts in other sections of the forum.

You should start at the chapter called "Strider" It's where the action really starts. If you've seen the movie, you can figure out what's going on.

I know a lot of people who can't get through it, because they get bogged down in the (I admit it's long) introduction.

Perhaps I will later. I liked The Hobbit, though the LOTR movies didn't really appeal to me. Too many pretty boys, and it just wasn't my style.

Welcome! I coach a community-college club, so it's nice to see more cc fencers out there (even if it's foil )

As for the glasses issue... I wear contacts, and I love it. I've actually been wearing contacts for (let's see...) more than 15 years, and in that time they've improved a lot. The soft lenses are super comfortable and breathable. (I wear the kind that you use for a month - taking them out every night - and then discard.) Even my husband, who for years was Mr. "I could never put something into my eyes!!!" finally tried them out and now loves wearing them. The key is to go to an eye doctor who specializes in contact lenses, so you can get a PROPER fit and follow-up session(s). There are different types and shapes, and you have to get the type that works best for your eyes.

There is a search function, if you use it you will find several glasses threads. Personally, I use a type that the Swedish Army hands out to its conscripts, and it is for sale to non-conscripts also. I have attached a jpg of them.

that mask right there, but actually I adjusted my glasses and haven't had any problems since!

    Thanks everyone for the help.

Ordway, I am one of those, "I could never put something in my eye" people. I have trouble watching my friends deal with their contacts.

Thank you everyone for the help.

I was too. You get over it if you have enough motivation. It took me three visits to the eye doctor learning to put them in- they won't let you work on more than half an hour per eye trying to get the contacts in because it irritates your eyes too much. But eventually I got it, and you just get more and more used to it.

I'm not that motivated, since my vision without glasses is about the same as the difference between a DVD and VHS tapes.
I can legally drive without my glasses.

Yeah, that's the case with me... I can see pretty well, like 20/25. I just have slight double vision without my glasses if I shift my eyes to the right (weird condition). I simply fence without my glasses. I can see fine and my depth perception is pretty good.

Shift your eyes to the right? Good thing we fence on a linear strip!

I really do need to wear glasses (or contacts)... my vision without them is I'm only semi-joking that I'd have a hard time seeing the lights, let alone my opponent.

I've found that its useful to take your mask in with you to select new frames.. I have one good pair of "Flexon" frames which are very good for other sports, but are 1/4" too wide for my current mask. My older pair work just fine with my mask.

Thank you, I shall remember that next time I need new glasses.

Also, thank you everyone for posting here. You've made me feel very welcome.

    Suilad Sword Hobbit!

My name is Sindaren Elvish for "iron butterfly".

When I get enough little green squares next to my name, that will be my user title.

Incidently, how do you get those things?

First of all, hey and welcome to the forum. Oh, and foil is the best anyway, so I wouldn't be too dissappointed to fence it. If your prescription is not to severe, you can try fecing without the glasses, but that might not work depending on the prescription. Contacts sort of scare me (I rarely put eyeliner on, touching my eye makes me scared, I don't know why) but I know a lot of fencers who have them and they work. You can take off your mask very carefully, undoing the velcro strap in the back them pulling the tongue out to make more space and pulling it either bery carefully up from the bib or down from the top. Ahh, I love having 20/20 vision. Anyway, no idea about the name, but good luck with that.
