    FRED offline

askFRED.net is offline due to unknown server problems. The machine is currently being investigated by the onsite techs; updates as events warrant.

    Thank-you for your patience...

And that is what I came here tonight to find out.
    Thanks for the update.

Oh, man, where is the love???
Down twice in four years, and poor FRED catches hell...

Update: the machine is back online for the time being, but continues to suffer unusally high loads. Not sure if it is just higher than normal traffic, or hardware issues. I continue to investigate.

    thank-you for your patience...

I'd like to remind everyone that there is a little button on the bottom left side of the AskFred website that allows you to make a donation. The Birmingham Fencing Club and I just make our second contribution to the cause in thanks for Peet's efforts... and in recognition of the fact that running this is not expense-free.

See, I would've gone with Fernando Lamas, myself. After all, it is better to fence good than to feel good.

Have not been able to access askfred

Hey, I haven't been able to access askfred.net for weeks! I'm starting to get the feeling it's just me! Has askfred been down this entire time, or is there another issue (IP somehow banned?)

I do have a brute force attack detection system running on FRED's server that permanently bans any IP that appears to be the source of such an attack, so maybe your ISP has given you an IP that was formerly in use by a compromised machine (or of course, it's possible that your machine has been compromised.)

PM or email me your IP address and I'll look for it in the BFD logs ("BFD" stands for "Brute Force Detection", not that rude phrase you're thinking of, you naughty boy!)

If you're not sure what your IP is, the easiest way to find out is to visit:

    cheers!

Because, as you yourself have so sagaciously determined, it gives you an opportunity to make a geeky joke!

    Wheeeee! Geek humor!

Whenever I'm worried I'm becoming too much of a geek, i give myself a geek checkup: tour this site and look at the shirts & stuff. As more and more of them make me say "Ha! that's hysterical!" and fewer make me say "umm, that's painfully geeky." or just plain "Huuh? WTF does that mean????", I fear more and more for my sanity.
