| I didn't start yelling until I saw it being done at my first NAC. Now it's getting quite bad. Ed Richards almost carded me twice last year for it!
I fint out that the better my opponent, the louder I yell when i get the touch. Usually it's a strong "Hu-paaaaaa".
I used to think sabre fencers yelled like they did just so they wouldn't get a card for swearing if they missed. Let's face it, most of the time you can't even swear in a foreign tongue.
I'm finding lately, though, that I'm ending up - after I've hit barely off-target in foil once too many times - grabbing my foil and talking to it with the phrase "Hit the silver part, Sam!"

| I'm a pretty quiet fencer, but one thing that really bugs me out is when i'm fencing my coach, and gives this evil little laugh . . it's funny when i'm not fencing with him, but when i am . . it's a very effective technique to make someone unsure of themselves

| "L'Chaim" means "to life" in Hebrew. It's generally a toast. I guess that would make sense, if fencing is your life.
Mazeltov means "congrats." I guess you can congratulate yourself on a job well done...
ok, so I was in Fiddler on the Roof in high school...

| I stole a line from Dr. Pierce Noble, a veteran fencer who was 79 when I first fenced him. "Be nice to me, I'm an old man" and preceded to skunk me 5-0!

| I agree with link14.
I think it is a really bad behavior. It is no better than giving your opponent the finger or pounding your chest like a gorilla. Not Gentlemanly conduct.
So whenever my opponent gets annoy I'd yell
ShAAAAAaaaaaaaaaaaat the fAck up when I score a point, to make a point. |

| bringing this back up again...
no, i disagree yelling increeses the intensity makes the hole bout become more personal and yelling isnt usaly something you plan to do its an automatic reaction of emotion alot of begening fencers dont yell only because of not knowing about it and not compeating much but higher level fencers will yell a lot, i yell when im siked and the adrenilan (sp?) is flowing and everything is moving so fast... yelling is a good advantage for the mind if you try to hold it back, well it just dosnt realy work. just my opinion
Chris

#52 | | Guest | Hmm. I'm too new to have a real yell yet, but I've begun yelling various fencer 'lightbulb change' jokes, and answering them after the touch.

| if you have to press your lips together to "make" a sound, you're thinking ahead about making a sound, and deciding which sound to make. If you are fencing without thinking of making a sound and your mouth opens up and a sound emits without compressing your lips together you are not trying to "make" a sound. What is the sound of one mouth flapping? I just spaced out here, it's an interesting topic. Don't exhaust yourself on it though. I want to hear more! |

or
hi-YAH
I sound like a freaking cartoon karate kid. And I wish I would yell something else, but that's what comes out when I manage to actually score a difficult touch on purpose.

| Best one yet. Opponent makes an attack, screams "YESSSSSSSSSSSSSS!" only to look at the box to find my light lit, accompanied by a rather, IMHO, sardonic, "Nope!" (not once but twice during the bout!)

| Along the same lines as Mergs...I frequently land after a furious round of bladework, yell and see it's off target. It usually goes something like (after landing, hearing the buzzer go off and pumping my fist) "HupaaaaaaahhhhShoot!" all in the same breath.
Never fails to get a laugh from the crowd, which makes it all worth it, win or lose.

| Sorry Sam, I read my post again. The "nope" was on my part, not the opponents. Needless to say she was getting real peeved by the director and, well.........
