My usual cause for demise in fencing is a fit of giggles. Anyone else have this problem? In one bout I fell backwards laughing. Maybe I was just really hyper or something... I guess it's good I'm having fun at least, even if I do lose, LoL

I'm not a "yeller" myself, but my coach is extremely fond of "OPA!!!!!" after a touch. We had a beginner at the club one time who turned to me and asked "Why does that man keep yelling "Oprah"?" I laughed so hard I almost keeled over.

ok, Flik and Zelda, I used to be fluent in Pig Latin in my early teens. Here's the translation:

"Fiay ouyay adhay allsbay, eythay ouldway ebay erehay!"

Ooday ouyay eakspay Igpay Atinlay?

Moonitic -

My coach can be very "...loud" and apparently you can be very ...diplomatic.

Hope to see you Saturday at the unclassified. I've been suckered into volunteering to fence foil if an extra woman is needed to make it a rated event. I just have to keep reminding myself - HIT WITH THE POINT, HIT WITH THE POINT!!!

Yelling really bugs me, which seems weird since I'm a sabrest. I see it as an attempt to influence the referee and fluster your opponent. It used to fluster me and would make me attack harder (and sloppier), and I'd lose more often than not.

Now that I'm a little older and (hopefully) wiser. My opponent's yelling just make me more determined to single light it so they can stick their "OPAH!" where the sun don't shine!

I usually yell when I get touched "Oh **** !" I know it's a bad habit but it just sneaks out.

Ladybug, I think you're safe. The Schoolcraft ladies will make a pool themselves, plus Cindy "hack n slash" will be there, & probably Amanda from U of M (lovely).

I'm not diplomatic...I just don't want him to kill me!

I don't yell to much.
But when i get a little pissed and they touch me i always yell "DAAAAAAAMMMMMMNNNNNNN" with like a 2 secs "DAAAAAAAA" followed by hiting my mask with my blade.
and when i touch the opponent i like to yell these 3 things:
a) "OLLLLLLEEEEEEEEEEEE!!"
b) "EEEEEPPPAAALLLLEEEEEEEEEE!!!"
or
c) "PRENDERE QUELLO!!"

Since I am amused (most of the time) by peoples' yelling I am going to try a new yell. (mostly as mockery)

(note: if you have never watched South Park or haven't seen any in the past year, don't bother reading the rest of this message)

Since I'm in college I should be able to draw some laughs by getting a tough point and throwing my hands up in the air while exclaiming "TIMMY!!". I tested this on a few of our people and it left them in stitches.

Ready... FENCE... (footwork)... click click clang!...(d'oh!)... (fencing stuff)... (one colored light on my side)... "TIMMY!!"

My non-PC comment for the week,
Mike

I actually spoke during a bout this past Saturday. I had never been so "on" during a tourney.

But I couldn't say anything more than "Yeah baby! Come on!" And that was very quiet. The rest of my comments were in my head.

Emfuser, I laffed my a** off! I'm a huge South Park fan, and do a good Cartman imitation, maybe I should try yelling, "Respect My Authora Tie!" after a touch. But "TIMMY!" -- that's hilarious!

Archangel will become famous soon enoughArchangel will become famous soon enough
I think I usually say "argh!" when I miss. The best I've ever said personally was a quiet sincere "well done." When I beat my rival. I've been known to mutter in Russian while I fence, but nothing louder than normal speech.

The most annoying was this guy that talked to himself IN REAL OLD LATIN!! What a punk! And he wasn't even that good. It felt so nice to beat him.

I've heard a number of funny yells. A bunch of guys in Seattle started doing "Epalololololo"..which started just as "Epa"....eh, it went to "Epalololololo" and "Epalololojejejejejeyusyus". I once saw Cody Mattern fencing a really loud yeller, and he said "oo-oo" with the same tones someone would say "yoo hoo"...really soft.
I don't yell, usually. Unless I'm being odd for fun.

Hmmm... whatever comes to mind...
Sometimes ET LA!!!!
Sometimes YEAH!!! (usually after the touch, when I make sure the colored light is on). But lately, I've reverted to my karate days as I kid and have been yelling Ki-AAAAHHH!
When I miss a touch or get touched, it's a very loud "AAAAAHHHHH... C'mon!"

as a beginning fencer, i haven't yet developed a yelling style, but one of my friends enjoys screaming "DIE!!!" when he goes to fleche. it usually scares the crap out of his opponent. teehee.
