| Need help for improving my parry I am a total beginner and I just started about 2 months ago. I fence only in my school's fencing club and we dont really have an official coach.so I pretty much have to teach myself how to fence. my friend told me that I always make those big movements when parrying and lunging. Can anyone please tell me a drill to improve my big parries?
p.s we are fencing epee and I am really shorter than average, any good advices for short people? |

| Work on it in drilling, not just in bouting.
Fencer A attacks (or simulates an attack).
Fencer B makes a parry and ripostes.
Use a variety of parries, a variety of ripostes. Work slowly, focusing on correct form. Just concentrate on making the action as tight as possible while still accomplishing the parry.
Even while you don't have "an official coach" you do, presumably, have more experienced clubmates. Get one of them who's willing to work with you to help refine your technique.

ps what school?

| Get a coach. That's the only way to learn fencing. Period. Where do you live? There is probably a real fencing club (i.e., one with a good coach) around. There's a utility on fencing.net's main page that helps you find good clubs geographically close to you. |

| I live in Roswell Atlanta.
I do want to have a coach though, and I am working a way out too.
Our club is actually supervised by a local fencing coach, but the coach doesnt really do one one one with us..., all he does is supervising us fencing. |

| Get a coach and drill are great advice.
Remember, when manipulating the blade, use your fingers, not your arm.
And, all you have to do is prevent the point from touching you, not bash it aside. The point follows the blade, so a small parry can deflect the point far off target.

| Don't sweat it. Get a coach. Experience will come with years.

| Foil is the training weapon for epee. Foil is where you learn all the parries and when to parry and when a parry is not needed. It is useful to have a good foundation in foil before going on to epee.

| You do need to bout in your club to learn WHEN to use your parries. My parries are much better in form than when I started, but I still need work on knowing when to use each one: not only which are best for a certain defense, but also to set up a riposte that your opponent is not expecting. it's a big mind****. Welcome to fencing!

| It can form bad habits for epee too, but no more so than doing nothing but bout with improper form. If a coach is not available or willing to work with you then find a club mate who is also interested in improving rather than just hitting people with metal.
Take turns working on your parries AND distance. If something seems awkward after much repetition maybe your "supervising" coach would get down from his pedestal and answer a few questions.

Try to use only your fingers when you parry an attack, this will help you and you do not need to do big parries.
Whe you attack, you must begin your attack first with your arm and then lung.
