| Northampton Meet There's a fencing meet this weekend in Northampton, Mass - the E & Under tournament.
Except apparently there are 2 clubs in the area. Does anyone know where this one is located? I have directions for the Northhampton Fencing Center (near a New England fixtures dock?). Is that the one I'm looking for?
Thanks. |

| Historically it's been at Northampton High School. Take I-90 West to 91 North. Take Exit 18 to Route 5. Go north on route 5 (turning left off the highway) until you hit route 9/Main St northampton--it's the first 4 way traffic light intersection you'll run in to. Turn left onto main street and continue on that road through downtown. Stay on that road until you reach the high school (it'll be on your left, opposite a park. Along your way, you'll pass smith college). If you pass a hospital or a field with some cows, you've gone too far.
I think that's the simplest way to get there from where you're coming from.
EDIT: Looks like Brad beat me to it |

| Okay thanks for the directions. So it's the Northamption Fencing *club*, at Northampton High school. Looks like I'm in for a bit of driving this weekend--I'm heading back to CT, so I'm taking I-91N to get to Northampton, then on the way back I-90E.
What do you think the competition's going to be like for sabre? E & Under means beginners at least have a shot at gold. |

Could you have meant:
"Defiantly at the high school"?
or perhaps:
"Definitely at the high school"?
Tsk, Tsk, the value of an education in rural areas.

"Definitely at the high school"
I'm not entirely sure I would consider Smith rural.... but they carry no responsibility for my utter failure to learn how to spell-- they only give me good grades in classes that don't involve the use of words.
My utter failure in learning how to spell can be attributed to a variety of places in my early education-- most of them being in Warwick, Rhode Island, which is most decidedly not rural--- it's one giant suburb bordered by "strip mall hell"......
I only got into Smith because of spellcheck. Otherwise, I might have mispelled the word "breast" in my essay..... and how embarassing would that have been??

The annual Noho E tends to.... create good stories.
Like the year that I lost to a girl 5-0 in pools (directed by my coach), had to fence her in DEs (directed by her coach), it was 14-14, there was a simultaneous action, and then we had to stop to wait for the foil awards, and THEN we could finish the bout. I won, she's still miffed about it, two years later-- which i only know because this year she's president of Smith Fencing, and i'm Vice President.....
That was the same year i fenced epee because they needed one more person to make it a D, and i didn't do that poorly. Followed by the next year when i fenced epee, and was about 2 touches away from getting a rating in epee before sabre.
There are bizarre calls, people who are fencing who enter results so their event will actually happen, people fencing weapons they don't usually fence......
It's so much fun.

| Out of curiosity, does the event alway run that slowly? I showed up at 8:15 and stayed to the bitter end as one of the people I was with placed 3rd in ME. Then had to look forward to a 2 hour ride back.

I haven't fenced that meet in six or seven years, but it was always a 12+ hour event. Amused to know that things haven't changed. |

and, uh, YEAH. it's always rediculously long for it being an NE division event that doesn't have that many people..................
last year it ran slightly better than this year, because last year, there were people entering results into the laptop who were more familiar with En Garde. this year, those of us who were very familiar with it were discouraged from getting near the laptop................

Still a worthwhile tournament to have, even if it does take 3x as long as it needs to. |

| The demand is certainly there for it... but I think with the size, they'd be better splitting it into a two day event rather than the one... I don't know how that would affect them getting the gym or not... but would make the days shorter...
Foil on saturday, epee and sabre on sunday...
just a thought.

-w | They don't need it to be a 2 day event. Most of the strips seemed to be empty more often than not. What they needed were more (any) referees. |

For example, one of the epee pools was running exceptionaly slow and there was an empty strip right next to it, but it was not double stripped. Referees could not have been a factor there as the ME pools were self-directed. I am not trying to exaggerate that we were waiting between 1/2 to an hour for them to finish.
