| Commercial w/ fencing A commercial just came on TNT, for CGM realty, I think, that featured fencing. It was kind of crappy, just two foilists "fencing" even though they stayed in en garde and were only doing blade work. Why show that when real fencing looks cooler anyway? Also, when the touch is made it's a really crappy touch straight to the gut. Anyone else see it?

| the company is CGM Mutual Funds. They've had the fencers as a part of their corporate logo as long as I can remember (at least 1990). Their funds have done well for me over the years.

| There has been a longstanding friction between the fencing community and CGM Investing. They refuse to spend a penny in support of fencing in any way but continue to have this long running theme of fencing in their ads. I have seen them mostly in publications.
I, and I believe some others, therefore feel fencers should boycott them.

| Well, I was completely unaware of that. Though by using fencers in their advertising or on there logos in no way subjects them to any financial responsibility to fencing. Fencing is not a trademarked or copyrighted activity last time I checked. Now, it would be a nice sign of good will and possibly a nice advertising tie-in if they were to become corporate sponsors of fencing. But as an investor in their funds, I have mixed feelings about administrative costs being spent on charity. It is an investment of my dollars after all, and I would like that investment to increase and be spent on things that increase it. People are more than welcome to boycott them if they wish. I for one choose to boycott Walmart for various other reasons.

| Different strokes for different folks. My feelings about this go back around 8-10 years.

| I MUCH prefer the FoodTV "There's better ways to compete with food" commercials that shows two epeeists wielding fish. Just the way they move and how they rip off their masks after the touch is made tells me they're "real fencers". |

| That's an interesting point about their lack of donations to fencing.
I wonder how many companies donate to charaties relating to their corporate "mascots."
Exxon has donated $9 million since the mid 90's to a fund for the preservation of tigers. Anyone else with a "mascot" either giving money or not to things related to the mascot?

How would giving money to fencing benefit CGM.
We (the fencers) do not have exclusive rights to our equipment and our technique.
I, for one, am glad that they feel that our sport conveys an image worth appropriating.

Have we trademarked fencing?
Since when is a company obliged to give money to every organization connected to things they use in their advertising campaigns? Why do you feel that we have a right to their money? |
