So my birthday is the 22nd, and I get some fencing stuff, prob. around $300 worth. I have been fencing for like 6 months, and I fence epee. I already own a 1600N mask and a glove. I assume it would make sense to buy clothes next. What should I get? I was thinking 350N underarm protector, pants, and a jacket. I am in college and perpetually broke.

See if you can fit an 800N version of one of those in there, especially either jacket or underarm protector. It will probably last longer, and as you have more chance to upgrade gear, you can replace the other parts as appropriate.

Go for 800 N kit as far as you can afford and save up for the rest later if you can't afford all at once. Personally I would get, in the following order, jacket, plastron, breeches.
Remember, 800 N does not only offer better safety, but also a 2nd hand value should you want to quit the sport. Happy shopping!
If you shop around, you should be able to get an 800N jacket, and a nice 350N chest protector and knickers for $300. ($220 for the jacket, $80 for the other things)
