| Psychological warfare One of my friends seems to ignore valid hits by me because I'm usually passive and don't bring it up to avoid offending him. Not ambiguous flicks or slight touches, but clear hits. However today I would've lost a match because he ignored multiple good touches, so I decided to say, "Could you please stop cheating?" and he went into a spaz and replied by saying, "Of course. You beat me 5-0 in every match. Great" or something to that effect and now he's in a crazy sulk.
Suggested course of action?

| Dry foil? Epee? If you can't get to a reel, use some of these. http://shop.fencing.net/Wrist_minire.../fav-93004.htm

| Kick the guy in the nuts. Winning should not be the real goal, but performing at your absolute best is. Tell that to him.

Tell him to grow up, and offer to give him a five point handicap

| And in the future, I would avoid such comments as "Could you please stop cheating?" because it's rather inflammatory and will immediately put someone on the defensive. Perhaps lead with "I believe that was a valid touch," or something along those lines?
The buzzer hookup thing is the coolest thing ever, BTW. Not cheap, but it would solve those pesky hit/no hit problems. Plus, it's good for training anytime.

| This is going to be most complicated, but thanks very much! This is the worst thing about fencing someone you know. Who's not such a model sportsman. *cringe*
You're right, I probably overdid that. When I claim it's a touch, he's just like "No. It didn't touch me." so, eh, I dunno. Thanks and peace out!

| Practice bouts don't matter so I don't worry about them. If the person does something that confuses you ask them why. When the touch matters there will be somebody else to make the call.

As for hits.. well you can either call him on it each hit, until he gets it straight, or you can not call anything, or just try to fence so well that every hit is undisputable...
As an aside, I had a guy years ago almost come unglued and start swinging on me in a similar circumstance. Why? Being a polite fencer, every time I had been hit, I would indicate it by tapping my chest, indicating I had been hit. He thought I was indicating it was my point.. And after I had indicated a half dozen hits, he thought I was negating every one of his touches. I was torqued too, since he wasn't indicating any hits at all.... Almost came to blows until I told him I was indicating I had been hit, and he was misunderstanding things... |

| ....... my team tends to have a lot of stress going on in their life, and thus every single muscle in their body is a little too tight, and therefor, a lot of the time, their cuts are a little too forceful. Not so that they hurt, but you can feel them.
thus, on days when they're relaxed enough to be a bit more precise, i usually don't feel it when i get hit. rather than say that i didn't get hit, i'll ALWAYS say "i didn't feel getting hit", because there have been times when i'll be the only person who didn't know i was hit.
it is entirely possible that you could be hitting, and he might actually not feel you hitting him. not all the time..... but a lot of the time. so when he says "you didn't hit me".... he might think it's the truth.

| Well isn't this just wonderful.....
Suggestions include:
- kicking him in the nuts
- anal violaton
- breaking his nose
Sounds like a training camp for interrogators headed to Abhu Gharab, not a fencing forum.

| Non offensive answer:
If it's practice, it really doesn't matter. Keep score in your own head if you have to, but just don't stress it. If it really bothers you, don't fence with him unless you have to. I teach a group of younger saber kids (12-14 years old maybe) and a group of very young (8-12) foil kids all with less than a years real experience. I tell them not to keep score, and that they can't really judge priority, so don't argue over who's touch it was. And the reality is that you often can't tell what would set off a light in saber (well, you usually can tell when it would, but plenty of things you don't feel will set one off too), and even if you know you got hit, you may not know who had ROW for the touch (assuming you both hit each other). And then if you do know, it's possible that one hit or the other might have been timed out on the new machine, and therefore you wouldn't know who's touch it was anyhow ><
Keeping score without electric scoring machines and without officials and/or side judges is just silly until you've both been doing this a while.
Just have fun ^^ |
