Tennis: Moving ahead with instant replay

Tennis moves ahead with instant replay

The formula is somewhat similar to what the NFL is currently using.

Each player receives two (2) challenges per set.

If the challenged call is upheld, then the player loses one of their challenges.

If the challenged call is overruled, the player retains their challenge.

An extra challenge would be given for tie breaks, and challenges do not carry over from one set to the next set.

------------------------

Pretty logical, eh?

Note: Challenges are expected to take only 10 seconds per occurance.

The article continues with a discussion of challenges being used as a ploy in gamesmanship.

I read that one as well and I have to say it is about time. However, as with the NFL the really gross inaccuracies will dealt with (for the most part - I'm a Seahawks fan so restraining from lambasting the superbowl refs here is very difficult). The line calls in tennis are so much easier to deal with on replay that they may even do away with bad line calls altogether (they are pretty few and far between anyway).

My question is: are you an advocate of using replay for fencing?

How much do you think it would cost per strip?

According to the article... the cost is 100k to implement the system...

For fencing? I have no idea. What they are using for tennis is "100% accurate with a margine of 3mm error". I doubt fencing would need to be that tight.
-------------

Seahawks fans: I feel your pain. That was truly horrible. Although, it would be much easier to capture a tennis court, or a fencing strip, with two people vs. a football field with 22 guys running around.

No chance is it that acurate in fencing. You are tracking many more points on many more planes but it would be interesting to see a bout called with multiple (4-6) camera angles in effect even if there is not a eagle-eye equivalent. Might at least answer the question: "parry or beat attack?"

I'm sure someone must have done this at some point in time, but I haven't seen it.
