-B | Running three separate tournaments would defeat the purpose of the format. changing one's focus between 3 weapons in a short time is a daunting task and that's part of the challenge. Think Biathlon.
And if it wasn't done above the local level, who would bother.

Think Modern Pentathlon, Decathlon, Heptathlon, etc.

-B | "Most people might think..."?! If you're going to go for the meaninglessly vague why not shoot for the moon and say "ALL people might think..."?
It's just as true and far more impressive.

| If you don't want people's opinions, then maybe you should ask for them.
That way you will be free to fence all the moronic events you wish - somewhere in la-la land... where you rule supreme with your trusty purple unicorn side-kick.
Here's a free prediction: Your events will never happen. Stop it.

| No! Wait!
I have an idea for the Olympics.
Everyone has to fence while holding a chicken.
I'll be sending a letter to Rogge tomorrow. Hint: If you don't understand the Olympics, and you don't understand fencing, might be best to avoid putting them into the same sentence.

I'm just wondering why many are so absolutely negative about it. Most of the posts focus on equipment issues. Other's, like your own call the idea moronic without any kind of detail about why.
Also, I'm not particularly worried about whether "my" events happen or not. I was just hoping (obviously beyond reason) that there might be an interesting debate about the idea. I can take the cons with the pros, but I fail to see any explicit cons in your comments, just raw disdain.

| Dude Mr. Epee chill out
An idea was tossed out, you don't agree with it. You have the right to express your opinion, but as an adult you should be able to do it in a way that is mature and reasonable.
The idea of a 3 weapon thing is fun, but probably best left at the local level. I don't see it flying in the olympics, but hey part of the fun of this forum is people tossing out new ideas. They don't deserve to be ridiculed. |

Depends on the "purpose of the format". I think the purpose of the format should be to demonstrate the capability to do multiple different activites at a high level. Think Modern Pentathlon, Decathlon, Heptathlon, etc.
Happier?

-B | Much
I can see your point. I think the major difference between your "purpose" and mine is the time between competing in different weapons. Both require a high level in all three. One of the goals of the short time frame between weapons was to add the ability to shift focus quickly to the mix.
I could see the appeal of both.

| Ok, NOW I think we're on to something!
For Saber bouts: Live, fully spurred rooster held in the off hand. Rooster is wired, spurs conductive, may be used to score on riposte, but never to parry.
For Foil bouts: must have hyperactive minature pinscher dog strapped to mask. Points to opponent for every bite suffered during bout.
For Epee bouts: just to speed things along, off hand is locked into a two compartment, transparent box filled with fire ants. After 90 seconds of elapsed fencing time, the interior door of box opens to release the fire ants.
I see Fox Sports written all over this made for TV event!

The idea was that using wireless scoring boxes could revolutionize the sport of fencing.
Speaking of revolutionary ideas, there is an epee coach in the LA area that has held a few doubles tournaments where there are two fencers on each side. A touch against either opponent counts. If your partner receives five touches, they're out and you wind up fencing two opponents simultaneously. I didn't try it but the fencers who did said it was really fun. I doubt it'll make it to the Olympics, though. |
