| epee, taking the blade Over the last few months or so I've been making the translationfrom foil to epee and I'm having problems with guarding my wrist and forearm while im attacking and I believe this is due to me not being able to successfully take the blade, so if anyone has any pointers please help!
thanks

| Are you unable to keep your blade on their blade? Alot of foilists continue to riposte in foil style (almost a "beat" parry) even when they fence epee.
Are these "wrist and forearm" exposure problem happening in all attacks or just ripostes?

thanks | Welcome to the senior weapon
How is your on guard position? Is your hand covered? I suspect that your problems are two fold – attacking with a bent arm, closing distance too quickly without getting your hand out first (this is my personal favorite) - and letting your wrist fly open when you close distance and attempt to beat.
Check your on guard position in front of a mirror and in front of your coach. Good drills with a partner will help your transition. Work on your footwork, epee footwork is more fastidious than foil.

thanks | Getting hit in the wrist or forearm (by me) would usually mean you are letting me get too close while keeping your arm bent. Or it could mean you are extending your arm on an attack, but your footwork is lacking, leading to a long slow approach into distance, so I can take a small retreat and pick my target on your arm. |

| Its because you are trying to take the blade from too far down the forte and with too big of an action exposing your wrist. Try taking from the foible and and extending as you lunge or fleche.

thanks | Get en guarde in front of a mirror and ask yourself how you would fence the guy standing in front of you in terms of wrist shots. What's open? What looks like it will be open when you parry? Then try a couple parries, and ask the same questions. Once this is all set, try fleches, extensions, etc.
If you do this once a week or so (and, of course, change your game accordingly) you'll find that people suddenly score far fewer wrist touches on you.
Of course, if you have a coach, he's a much quicker solution. |

Do not listen to the retarded advice of Biggs. It is harmful. |

| One other piece of advice is check your hand position. Keep your thumb on top in your actions. |

| i had found this same problem just when i started fencing. it is correctable though. i found that one problem was that my wrists were just to weak so do some wrist curls. then i also found that in epee taking the blade is not always needed. sometimes depending on who ur fencing u can just beat attack. as long as ur alittle taller then the other guy and a little quicker there is no defence. idk if it will help u but it made me pretty good
