| Chinese fencing and '08 Watching Leipzig I was impressed with Zhang's style - not that I know much - but especially considering his age, I thought he did very well (although Sanzo tore him up). I also understand from the match commentary that China has put $1 million into their fencing program. Is there going to be an Asian ascent similar to Japan/Korea '02 World Cup (football) at the '08 Olympics?

| China has already been doing very well. They just haven't been going to as many WCs as they could. They will before '08 and may very well sweep in several events.
Look, at the 2004, they took 2nd in MFT, MEI, WSI. They have a strong WE group. Once they strengthen their MS and WF, they can be quite formidable.

| Their ascent has been ongoing for the last few years. Demonstrating, once again, what a socialist country can do when it decides to succeed in fencing, China has gone, incredibly quickly, from a fencing nobody to a near superpower.
As much as the American "renaissance" is exciting and impressive, China looks like it could become a monster. |

| They've got 1.2 brazilian people to pick from for their best in basketball, fencing, baseball, pole-vaulting, chemistry, computer hacking (er, programming), dentistry, forestry, whoring and whatever else they want to put their interests in. By 2030, they will be the sole world superpower. And if they're nice, they might let some other country win a medal or two in Olympics or anything else.

| Maybe. But remember: only like ten of them get to eat and only 2% of the country is female. |

Thank you! | It comes from a recent political joke:
Donald Rumsfeld: Mr. President, it was reported that 3 Brazilian soldiers were killed today in Iraq from a car bomb.
GWBush: 3 Brazilian! Oh my god! That's horrible. That's incredibly awful. I don't know what we should do now....
Rummy: But Mr. President, it's only 3 Brazilians...
GWBush: How many is a brazilian, again?

| Our president can beat Dan Kellner 15-0 with a swizzle stick attached to a 9-volt battery.

| Mm, I often wonder what happens to the thousands of Chinese athletes in training who don't make the cut. Shot pour encourager les autres? Turned into training dummies? Fed to the survivors? |

I heard that those athletes will have to mimic the style of the famous foreign fencers and help the "good fencers" practice. |
