but they may have funding problems too, after all, china is still a developing conutry. The monthly pay for a normal citizen in a mid-size city may be around 125-300 US dollar if you do the conversion. Now think about the prices for the FIE jacket, FIE masks, FIE blade, etc. ect. ect

i am not under training with them, just schoolmates. i am an amateur only. however i have to say they are really hardworking. and fencing is a new sports to China, not popular since the equipments are rare and complicated. and the colothes are really easy to get dirty.

And its no suprise that you would be the one to talk well of chinese fencing.

Guys don't listen to him. He's racially biased, and he knows nothing about fencing.

The chinese are dangerous. Like the US, nobody should underestime them.

You know Grant, even if you used smileys this the kind of comments that derail threads. "Racial bias" is a statement that should not be bandied around lightly.

Methinks that some people do not get sarcasm. Do I have to be yet simpler?

Sarcastic comments suggesting racial bias might have to be a good deal less simple before people can be amused by them.

Wow! I'd forgotten about this thread... It's cool that we've got actual posters from China!

This is purely from memory, but while watching one of the Zhang matches, I recall the commentators saying China had invested something like a million dollars into the fencing program (they went on to say the U.S. funding for fencing generally consisted of a sweatsuit)- now that may not trickle down to the fencers and may be capital improvements, but it sounded like China was putting resources into a sport that could bring them medals in '08. I'm sure U.S. fencers have better personal resources, but the Chinese government can definitely make a difference if they so choose. Of course this analysis is from the other side of the world... It's interesting to hear the views of those more closely associated.

Zang is not the only strong foilest in China right now. Keep an eye out for Lei who has already won a world cup this season and 2004 junior world champ Zhu who is already climbing the senior rankings. I pearsonally think Zhu has the coolest style in the world. Over all I recon China may just pull out the gold in 2008 with those 4.

It's all right by me. Some people can take a joke or a ribbing and some can't. The thing is, not everyone knows that I'm chinese. That's still my only hope of anonyminity when I go travelling.

    Hahahaha!
I hope I live to see the day when fencing is so popular - although perhaps the First Fencer might get mobbed...

It sucks for China there is no MF team in the 2008 games, they could really do well in that event. I have a feeling we'll see a very strong showing for China in the individual though.

Watch out for Feng Wang (men's epee) as well, this olympics may be too soon for him to do fantastically well because he still has 2 years left as a junior but I could still see him making a pretty good result

    Grant,
I have to say, you've matured a great deal, from the punkass kid that everyone ragged on.

Now, you can form full sentences, which sometimes achieve clarity and approach the truth. When this happens, it's undeniable that you're right.

Most of the time, this does not happen, and you look like an ass. If I were you, I'd practice for consistancy... try and raise the standard for your worst days...

Look, maybe most people know Eric for who he is, and understand the joke. Some, do not, and to them, what you wrote looks very insensitive and crass...
