| New Jersey Assemblyman wants to ban forum anonymity http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20060307-6332.html
Idiot introduces a bill to Quote: |
The operator of any interactive computer service or an Internet service provider shall establish, maintain and enforce a policy to require any information content provider who posts written messages on a public forum website either to be identified by a legal name and address, or to register a legal name and address with the operator of the interactive computer service or the Internet service provider through which the information content provider gains access to the interactive computer service or Internet, as appropriate.
| The more I hear about NJ laws (particularly gun control), the more I realize the only things I value there are highway access to New England, DuellistUSA & Absolute Fencing Gear, and a high school fencing setup that ought to spread. |

| I didn't bother to read the link, so maybe this is answered there, but is the purpose of this proposed law something along the lines of making it easier for law enforcement to identify sexual predators of children? Because that's the only way I can see it having a chance of passing. Otherwise, there's all kinds of legal problems with the idea apart from basic effectiveness concerns (cannot ensure that the data is correct, after all).
And NJ can't really tell you what to do elsewhere, so even if it was enforceable (which I seriously doubt) it wouldn't be very effective.
Seems like a waste of political hot air.

| According to the article, the purpose is to cut down on flaming, because the Assemblyman doesn't like what was being said about him. |

| Interesting. So I guess he wants identifiable people to sue for libel, slander or defamation? That's akin to requiring members of a crowd to be positively identified before gathering, just in case any of them shouts out bad things about a state legislator.
What an idiot.

| I thought it was the 'no fleche' rule in NJ HS fencing that had everyone offended!

| How absurd.
They can't protect basic copyright laws with the entire music industry on them, how are they going to do this when everyone opposes it? |

| Just politicians preening in front of the camera so to speak.
It is unenforceable, and ridiculous.
No different, really, than trying to ban assault weapons based on how fearsome they look.
