| Have you served in your Nation's military? Just a quick poll to see who's served and who hasn't.

| By "served", do you mean wearing a uniform?
Does time in the Reserves count?

| Wow, the thread pops up before the polls. Interesting.
Yes, I mean any and all uniformed military service: reserves, regular force, army/navy/airforce.
Not included: Police, Fire, Ambulance, Coast Guard, Foreign Affairs, Boy Scouts, Cadets (even uniformed cadet officers)

| Same reason police don't.
I'm not saying that the coast guard (or police or fire or foreign affairs) are not noble, valuable, national assets. They just ain't the military.
James.

| My hiatus from fencing was largely due to being in the military after college.
Unlike Army Fencer in the forums, I actually had to tote a gun around and get shot at......I wish I could have fenced to pay back my college scholarship!

| I did not serve. However my father, now gone to his heavenly reward, was a Citadel Graduate Class of 46... most of his class died in WWII. He retired after a life time of service -- Regular Army, Corps of Engineers, S.A.M.E. -- Lt.C. G. W. Woodard. His dad, George Sr, wore the Big Red One...

| Yep.
If you count one year in goverment sponsored boy scout camp
Infantry, in US you would probably say light infantry.

Reminds me of a classic blackadder WW1 sketch in which edmund is asked if he enjoys being a soldier
Edmund: Well, you see, George, I did like it, back in the old days when the prerequisite of a British campaign was that the enemy should under no circumstances carry guns -- even spears made us think twice. he kind of people we liked to fight were two feet tall and armed with dry grass.
George: Now, come off it, sir -- what about M'boto Gorge, for heaven's sake?
Edmund: Yes, that was a bit of a nasty one -- ten thousand D'watushi warriors armed to the teeth with kiwi fruit and guava halves. After the battle, instead of taking prisoners, we simply made a huge fruit salad. No, when I joined up, I never imagined anything as awful as this war. I'd had fifteen years of military experience, perfecting the art of ordering a pink gin and saying "Do you do it doggy-doggy?" in Swahili.

But in Greece you must join the army because we are few.

| Over eight years in the Marines. Also (mostly) explains why I haven't fenced for 10-some-odd years. One 6-month tour on a ship in 2002 and a 7-month tour to Iraq in 2004. I got out to take care of my son...and because my husband and I hardly saw each other since one of us was always deployed. Quote: |

My cousin served with the Royal Marines in Afghanistan and Iraq (91 and 03) he said that first thing you had to do was 'source' some US equipment. Apparently your boots don't melt in the desert! US food ration are much better too I hear.

The rations are OK. Doesn't matter so much anyway because all of the major bases in Iraq have Taco Bell, Subway, Pizza Hut, and Burger King, in addition to the regular chow hall (you never hear about that in the news!) Of course, they built all that stuff AFTER I left... |
