| Help: NAC registration? I'm interested in competing in one of the NAC Division events this year, but I'm a little unclear about my registration choices.
Can I compete in Div. II and Div. III events just by showing up? Or must I qualify somewhere else first?

| Qualification is only required for Div II/III Summer Nationals. For Div II/III NACs, you only have to send in your registration on time (you can't 'just show up', if by that you mean register at-the-door).

| re 'show up': oops. Well, yeah. I knew better than THAT, at least.
Thanks for the info.
So doesn't everyone generally try to compete in both events? Will there be a difference of quality in the competitions? |

| Div II is limited to fencers with a "C" rating and below at the time of registration.
Div III is limited to fencers with a "D" rating and below at the time of registration.
You'll fencer better fencers in the Div II. If you are a "D", then fencing both will give you lots of bouting experience.
Hope this helps,

| For Div II/III nationals do you get qualification from your Division Qualifying tourney and/or Sectional tourney?
From what I understand, you have to place in the top 30% (correct?) for Div II and you just have to compete to qualify for Div III.

| You can qualify for Div II/III Nat'ls either through your divisional qualification tournament or through your Sectional championships.
You're right about how to qualify through the divisional tourney (top 30% to Div II, all (excluding C's obviously) to div III).
To qualify through sectionals is a little more complicated. Everyone D and under qualifies for Div III (okay, that's not the complicated part). For Div II, take everyone in the order that they placed, throw out all of the A's, B's, and people already qualified for Div II, and the top 6 remaining fencers qualify to Div II.
For the NACs you don't need to qualify anywhere, just send in the form and your money.

| Please check the USFA website for qualifying paths to all national championships events.
Basically, all divisions are required to run a Div II Summer National qualifiers. The top 30% qualify for Div II. All fencers who ENTER, and have a D or lower at the time of entry will qualify for Div III. All fencers who ENTER, and are of veteran age (whatever that is, now), will qualify for the appropriate veterans event.
Then, at the sectional championships, the top 6 C-under fencers qualify to Div II and all D-under who attend the sectionals qualify to the Div III. All veterans who attend the sectionals also qualify.
The USFA website page is more thorough than what I wrote above.

| I don't mean to offend anyone who fences in Div III, obviously, this doesn't apply to every fencer in that division.
Bugaboo-you are going to find alot more hackers in that division than in any other. By hackers I just mean people with fairly loose training and occasionally sloppy technique. Again, there are some of those in most divisions, but if you want a higher quality fencing experience, depending on your age, then Div II would definitely be the wiser choice. |

| Well, I can afford a day for Div-II OR Div-III, but not both. I haven't decided yet.
When you're faced with chosing one or the other, what do you consider?

| Well, the question becomes:
Do you want to fence against the most experienced people you can in order to better improve your game, or do you want to fence the least experienced in the hopes of getting a good placement?
Note that I say "in the hopes" for getting placement - When fencing lower level fencers, there is a good chance to lose simply because they don't react correctly.
I'm of the opinion that you go to the highest level competition that you can qualify for. That way you get rewarded to fence cleanly and at the top of your abilities and you are challenged.
Cheers,
Craig |
