...and then you'll do all sorts of other things to make yourself sore.

make sure you're always in correct form- it helps a lot. once you start in on footwork, try to stay light on your feet. i've been fencing for 6 months and i still get sore after workouts. always stretch properly before and after you work out.

Practice what you learn at home.

After fencing for 20 years as a righty, I am now learning to fence left handed due to a nagging fencing elbow problem... After 2 1/2 hours of left handed footwork & bladework on Monday, I am sore! Different muscles on the left, that are strengthened on the right side, are groaning at me! So I guess I can relate to the beginners again.

LoL Thanks guys. Though I wasn't as sore as I thought I'd be. Yes, I am practicing at home I'm practicing keeping my footing right when I move and stuff... But, I'm awaiting the days till my next lesson! Thanks everyone!

Hey, you just wait until your right arm's muscles are bigger than your lefts, and your right leg muscles are likewise, it's almost funny, but that's what happens, so if you don't want to be "lop-sided" try doing more things with your left...haha, you will see what I am talking about!

If you are just starting - my best advice is to quit - you have entered the world of sick unwanted sports... J/K the world is a beautiful place but unless you have access to a major fencing center you might be better off sticking with those "magic the gathering" cards ...

Sport fencing is nothing like "real" swordplay any attempt for you to pretend like it is, will only result in a candy striped back from those simians with illegal leon paul/Chinese blades

    Who is your coach?

I've been fencing for almost 9 years, and somethimes i still feel sore, so it's kind of an every day thing.
Try to stretch every muscle before your lessons, and try to take more lessons, not just once a week.
    Good Luck!
And welcome to the beautiful Fencing World!!

Hello! I forgot the name of my coach >.> LoL Sorry! But yea, I wish I could do it more than once a week. My mom says that if I like it, we'll see. Plus, the club is open almost everynight, so I can go on club nights, and just practice.

I second the ouch. I just got back from my first fencing practice since mid-December. (I fence at college.) All those tiny muscles that got nearly a month off are not too happy about being pressed back into service. My legs are fine, because I could do footwork at home over break, but oww, my sword arm. Its not used to being held up and extended and relaxed that much.

The alumni of my fencing team who are now in college had come to our practices over winter break so that they wouldn't get out of shape.

FencingQueen- I wanted to fence more than once a week for so long. I took a continuing education course that met every Monday and once the fencing season started with practice every day, I was in heaven.

well i'm back into training next week, after a lovely summer break, but i been roller blading 15km once a week & taken my training foil with me as a weight for my weapon arm [which is a broken foil with 3 other broken blades on it]
so hopefully i'm not too out of shape
