| And she got the refs the greatest food we've ever had (well ok, in my memory any way ) in Reno. Hot breakfast, quality lunches with vegetarian alternatives (IIRC), two or three different salad choices, and these really yummy desserts! We even had salmon one day!
All for way less $ than the USFA usually gets gouged for food at the convention center gigs! That's what we like to call win-win!
Christine rocks!

| I got a minor earful from the head ref of my quadrent once for not coming back quite quick enough from lunch (we were rotating). I said "It's steak day, I had to finish it!" Great food, indeed.
Also, at dinner on Thursday night I mentioned this thread to her and she said Craig had already sent her a link. So our praises have been heard. |

| This thread must have got around -- several times I heard "Rocks!" "No, Rules!' arguments break out at Reno. Quote: |

In negotiations with places in Reno you also have the leverage that they're not Vegas. |

| If I'm going to spend a week somewhere, I don't want to pay $10.99 per day per computer for internet access. However, otherwise that's not a terrible idea. However, consider the Reno Hilton had room for 32 strips, and that was over two rooms, several strips were much closer together than we'd like, and others had pillars obstructing the officials. (I directed 2 sabre pools from 2 feet away from the strip at best)
Now consider that Nationals will have 60 strips or more, and more vendors... |

However, we might be able to do it somewhere else, bigger, where we can find that kind of leverage. At least now Christine knows to specify that they include pillars on her maps.

I think Reno would be a great location for Nationals for the reasons above - casinos are itching to fill their rooms during the week. I sure would love to return there... especially if it coincides with another WPT event!

Not to say they won't, but I'd rather not.

| Compared to Deep South + July, and Air Conditioning on both sides, I'd say it's a moot point. |

| Back on topic, you worm!
This thread isn't about you and your taste in weather.
(This was meant in jest).

| Given Christine told me she's going down to Tucson for a site visit, desert weather is somewhat on topic. |

| AIM convo via Gaim (13:01:39) jay choi: For every 1 fencer who makes it, there are 10 support personnel who made it happen.
(13:02:06) jay choi: Hey, they went there in the first place because I reffed the events they fenced to get where they are.
(13:02:07) jay choi: :-)
(13:02:45) jay choi: If it weren't for the referees, armorers, team captains, strip layers, bout committee, Christine Simmons, committee officers/volunteers, there is no Team USA.
(13:02:55) jay choi: Note Christime Simmons gets her own category.
(13:02:59) jay choi: :-D
(13:03:02) Mike Dote: she should get two

| I'm with Jay on this! Fencers get too much credit. It's my hope that we'll soon be able to run tournaments without them. |

| Christine Rocks! You guys don't even realize how much she does BEFORE the event; you just see her AT the event.
But please, the Reno Hilton was NOT a good venue. Two rooms is always bad, the columns were bad, there is no loading dock (did you notice the big black plastic crates around? That's what we pack strips in. Without a loading dock, the fork lift can only put the crate on the end of the truck. Then we have to push them back, stacked two high. Same problem in Miami NAC this year). There was limited choices for food, always crowded.... The catered food for officials was best yet though.
Christine did check out the convention center. She said it was great. I expect we'll be back to Reno, but at the convention center. I suggested she see if she could get the Hilton to cater |

| Yep...Christine is the true glue that holds together the competitions. She takes care of the fencers and the vendors and is not adverse to getting her hands dirty.
Kai Christine! |
