| We gave out rolls of red duct tape at the Red Tape Open.

| Fencing bags at a Div II/III NAC some years ago. They were made out of vinyl upholstery material but they were hardy.

| Last May, at the "Blades at the Beach" tournament in Myrtle Beach, SC, I won the Women's sabre. First prize (for all weapons) was a quite large model ship called "Sea Witch". It sits on my mantle, and everyone who comes to my house remark on how cool it is. |

| I've gotten that one before. Honestly, the coolest prize I won was a bottle of booze.

| We have a "Hangover Epee" event every Jan 1st, and this was the first time I made it in the six years I've lived in NYC.
All prizes (there were prizes for 1st through 24th I believe) were liquid-based. Top 6 got to pick from choice alcohol. The remaining were all wrapped and you got to pick one. Everybody unwraps it as they come up and shows what they won. Was very cool and everybody stayed around to get their prize and watch.
I won a bottle of Goldschlagger for 3rd place. |

For a number of years, George M. had a bottle of Johnnie Walker Blue (retail approx $200) on the line at that competition... I think he won it back for himself at least twice.
Always wanted to go, but was um... a little too in the "spirits" of the season.

| We (Richmond Fencing Club) occasionally give out "gag" prizes, instead of the usual medals or trophies. My favorite of these was the "Avenging Unicorn Playset"...note, this was not for a Youth event. http://www.accoutrements.com/products/11554.html
I've also been to epee events at DCFC where it's a "white elephant"...meaning that each fencer brings a random non-traditional prize to add to the prize pool, and the winner gets first choice. I have a really awful artificial potted plant from Isaac Erbele on top of my TV right now.
Virginia Tech, at the yearly Tech Open, give out trophies with unique tops. In the past these have included 8-balls, witches, largemouth bass, pigs, tractors, a horses' ***, and toilets. The Champion gets a sword, and only the 2nd place (first loser) finisher get the "insulting" regular fencing trophy. |

| We go to that tournament at Tech every year.....just for the prizes. Although I've never made the top 8, my husband has a lovely collection of swords from there, as well as the 8 ball, the foosball guy, and the horses rear end. |

| I got a rubber chicken keychain and a 4 pack of Cadburry cream eggs, that was pretty awesome! It was this wacky tournament where you sign up individually, then get placed into random 3 people teams with others who show up to the tournament, they gave out a bunch of great prizes, and that was just what we got for taking 3rd, I believe it was. Forget what 1st and 2nd was, but it was cool, trust me! |

| I am not quite sure that our champions found it just as funny as we did, but we gave away rediculous red rose heart-shaped wreaths at Nellya's Cupid Cup last month.
The organizers though got a big kick out of it. |

| Ask Oiuyt about the *SWORD* he picked up at last year's Memorial Day round robin at Prise de Fer. It was quite lovely. And boy, did he earn it!

| For several years at our Veterans Challenge we gave out age group awards of brown paper bags with Old Folks joke presents inside. The recipients were required to open and describe the prize. A couple of red faces but mostly good laughs.

| SYRC last year. 1st place finishers in the Y10/12/14 groups were awarded very large, and pretty sharp swords. The kids enjoyed them for about 5 seconds before they were promptly confiscated by concerned parents. |

Once I got a can of vienna sausage for finishing top 8 in a tournament. It wasn't called the "food open" or "sausage open" (joke opportunity here) or anything else...I don't even think it had a name.
I'm still scratching my head on that one. |

| The Champagne Challenge events in the Mid-Atlantic Section give out a bottle of champagne to the winner. I got one just before I moved out west. I don't drink, but it makes a nice bookend.
I got a potato once at the Pomme de Terre. I think now they do potato-themed prizes, but that one they gave out actual potatoes. Being a poor college undergrad at the time, I took it home, baked it, and ate it. Yum.
I like prizes that you can display. The Long Beach Open gave out lovely plaques that were made of about inch-thick glass. Best not to drop them on one's toe, though - they're heavy! The Couturier Open gave out super prizes - a full-length sword to first place and daggers to the top 8.
For medals, I like ones that are customized to the event. I got kind of sick of generic Maryland Division medals by the time I moved away. (I have also noticed that the San Diego division medals seem to have a headless fencer. Honest! Look at it!) |
